The Canadian Wildcat Varsity
An Eye on
Wildcat Football
By Bob Lusk
THE CANADIAN WILDCATS enter the 2005
season with lofty expectations, having reached
deep into the class 2A state playoffs the last two
years. Fresh on the young Wildcats' minds will
be the 14-win, 1-loss 2004 campaign that ended
one week too soon at the hands of the Crawford
Pirates inthe2A Division2 State Semifinals.
Along the way, Canadian defeated a slew of
ranked teams, including 3A #1 Perryton, 2A
#3 Jim Ned, 2A #8 Holliday, and Oklahoma
State semifinalist Beaver High School. Fortu-
nately, the cupboard is not bare for Canadian
as it returns 19 lettermen from last year, with
6 starters back on both offense and defense.
Additionally playing in eight pressure-packed
playoff games the past two years has given many
young Wildcats some much needed experience
which will undoubtedly pay dividends early in
the season.
Leading the way for the Wildcats will be a
strong senior class. Bryant Brock returns at
quarterback after having passed for 1,600 yards
and 20 TD's as a junior. Casey Carr is back at
receiver and defensive back, having earned All-
district honors at both positions a year ago. Da-
vid Young, who also started on offense and de-
fense last year, returns as well. Trevor Schafer
will likely split time at both fullback and tailback,
with Logan Baker also back after an injury.
Along the offensive front, Aaron Scheffer
is back at center, Collin Loworn returns at
guard, and Abraham Herrera makes the move
from tight end to the interior line, as well as Tad
Kirkhart.
Defensively, in addition to Casey Carr and
David Young, junior Matt Dickinson returns at
nose tackle after an all-district sophomore year,
along with linebackers Trevor Schafer, Grant
Stucki, and Antonio Cardoza. Luke Weaver and
Dominick Vasquez also return on the defensive
side of the ball. Moving up from the JV will be
Ben Hill, Colton Cooper, Kelby Dorr is, Ray Wil-
liams, Corey Martin, Eduardo Campos, and Ma-
son Fletcher.
Pre-District Games
Having already scrimmaged the Stratford
Elks and Claude Mustangs, the Wildcats will
open up the season this Friday with the 1A Mem-
phis Cyclones coming to town. Memphis had a
disappointing 2004, going 3-7 including a 53-12
loss to the Wildcats. The Cyclones do have a lot
of experience returning and always have a lot of
team speed to contain.
On September 2nd, Canadian travels to Am-
arillo to face River Road, which will be playing
under their third coach in as many years. Bryan
Welps moves over from Highland Park as the
newest head coach for the Wildcats. River Road
is picked to finish last in its tough district 1-3A.
September 9th, Perryton plays host to the
Wildcats. Uncharacteristically, the Rangers are
not picked to win district 1-3A this year, having
graduated many starters last spring. As Cana-
dian fans know, talent is never a problem for Per-
ryton and with the game being staged at Ranger
field, this game will provide an early season mea-
suring stick for the Wildcats.
September 16th, Canadian plays host to the
Beaver Dusters. Last year, Beaver played the
Wildcats better than any team all year, and
proved it was no fluke by playing four rounds
deep into the playoffs.
District 7-24: A Look Ahead
Spearman: The Lynx are coming off of an
8-3 season and Bi-District playoff appearance,
losing to Holliday in double Overtime. Coach Ric
Smith, who has compiled a 99-46win/loss record
as head coach at Spearman, has just 3 starters
returning from 2004, but will likely rely on an
undefeated JV to fill the holes left by gradua-
tion.
Boys Ranch: The Roughriders limped to a
2-8 record last year, but did manage to win a dis-
trict game for the first time in recent memoiy.
New Head coach Michael Lozano welcomes 2
offensive and 7 defensive starters back, but last
year's JV went winless.
Amarillo Highland Park: The Hornets who
went 3-7 a year ago, welcome new Head Coach,
Victor Soliz. HP returns 3 starters on offense
and 6 on defense, including RB Robert Soley-
jaeks who starts the season at 6'3" and 235
pounds. The Hornet JVwent2-81astyear.
Sanford Fritch: Rick Ware returns 8 of-
fensive and 7 defensive starters from last yea^
when the Eagles went 4-6. Several close losses
last year and the largest enrollment in the dis-
trict make SF a potential playoff contender this
year.
Panhandle: The Panthers were young last
year, but still managed to make the playoffs
where they were defeated by Henrietta 40-20 in
Bi-District. 15 returning lettermen, including 6
offensive and 7 defensive starters leave the Pan-
handle faithful with high hopes for this season.
David Sparkman returns for his 7th season at
the helm and has compiled a 41-35 record dur-
ing that span.
West Texas: Coach David Wright returns for
his 2nd year at the helm of the Comanches, hav-
ing gone 1-9 last year. WT returns 6 offensive
and 5 defensive starters from last year's young
team Size will be a plus for WT this year, as they
boast 7 players over 220 pounds.
