After waiting five years for a "second" Triennial, the Contemporary Art Museum's current Texas/Between Two
Worlds exhibition is a major disappointment for Texas only because of all the expectations and the hyperbole
that attended it. So not surprisingly, the opening night was an "up to" kind of event. Fortunately, the SWAT-
rock team was also there, pumping out angst. Yes..."two worlds": Prozac and Methedrine.
"Texas/Between Two Worlds is about looking at that which is real yet difficult to actually see,"
the gray area -so says the handsome, informative Rigsby-Design catalogue produced by
Lynn M. Herbert, the Contemporary Art Museum's Associate Curator. Then why this title,
Texas/Between Two Worlds [T/BTW]? Why these particular artists in this particular show? Neither the
catalogue nor the guide will answer these questions. However, bemoaning the CAM's vacillated
selection process, and the spontaneously evolved intent of this show, is almost comic by this point.
Indeed, Steve Martin once said comedy is a "discipline of choices," and the same can be said of
curating: you can't do the expected, but just doing anything won't cut it either.
