White.
One word, one person.
That is all it took for a
wave of awareness to wash
over Facebook.
An unknown source
started a simple message
to raise awareness for
breast cancer and it took
off.
The social network,
which has been growing
in bounds for the past
year, has tried to find the
origin of the message,
but has yet to unveil the
source, according to news
articles.
A spokeswoman for
The Susan B. Koman
Foundation said that they
are not responsible for the
message, but believes it
to be a great tool to raise
awareness, according to
FOX News coverage.
Women should routinely
go for mammograms and
do monthly self-checks at
home.
Breast Cancer Awareness
Month is every October,
but the attention paid to
breast cancer should con-
tinue every month.
There are numerous
ways to help raise aware-
ness:
1. Designate a "Pink
Day" for your office —
have everyone wear some
form of pink and have
special activities or even
a table of information set
up. Donations could be
collected, secretly if pre-
ferred, and donated to
the local Breast Cancer
Foundation.
2. Create teams and take
part in the local Relay for
Life.
3. Put together a fund-
raiser and have all dona-
tions go to your local breast
cancer organization.
Some local organiza-
tions that are taking the
step to raise awareness are
the local basketball teams.
The Sweetwater Middle
School and Sweetwater
High School girls recently
designated a basketball
game to breast cancer
awareness.
"It's a good way for stu-
dents to realize that there
are ways to help people
dealing with cancer," Jill
Locklar, SMS girls basket-
ball coach, said previously
about the cause.
The Roscoe basketball
teams will soon be play-
ing their second game for
awareness this year. The
first game took place ear-
lier this month, in Albany.
Rocky Ford, Roscoe
head girl's coach and
Albany head girls coach,
Paul Johnston, came up
with the idea last year,
for Coaches vs. Cancer.
Coaches vs. Cancer is a
national collaboration
between the AMC and
the National Association
of Basketball Coaches.
Their main goal is to raise
money for research and
education.
Area basketball coach-
es, as well as many oth-
ers, have been affected or
known someone affected
by cancer.
"I have always wanted to
do something for the fight
against cancer," Ford said,
last year in an interview.
The game will take place
at the Roscoe gymnasium,
on Jan. 29, at 6:30 p.m.
for the girls and 8 p.m. for
the boys.
Awareness is important
because the best treatment
is prevention. The sooner
you are able to catch it, the
better chance you have of
eliminating it.
The gesture doesn't
have to be big. The small-
est movement can spark a
flame and raise the aware-
ness needed.
Women are encouraged
to do monthly, at-home
checks and get routine
mammograms.
