fire damage up to42,000 acres
According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, the White Hat fire in Nolan County is slowing down and
getting more and more under control as local and state firefighters battle the blaze. A slight rain on Tuesday
evening helped firefighters in places that could not be reached. Madden stated that the Texas Forest service
estimates that the fire has burned about 65,000 acres. According to the Texas Forest Service, the fire is 30 per-
cent contained. There have been voluntary evacuations around the Maryneal community. Heavy airtankers
and single-engine airtankers dropped on this fire and the fire received an FMAG (Fire Management Assistance
Grant). The fire has claimed at least 12 structures including homes and hunting cabins.

The local fascination
with rattlesnakes will be
getting some national
attention this Wednesday
evening.
Sweetwater Jaycee Riley
Sawyers, along with friends
Allen Wells ind Brandon
Watson, will be appear-
ing on the pilot episode of
"Rattlesnake Republic" on
Animal Planet. The show
will be broadcast at 9 p.m
on Wednesday night, June
22.
Though unable to
divulge some of the show's
happenings due to con-
tract stipulations, Sawyers
did share that his hunt
ing expedition was filmed
close to the Sweetwater
area. He also said that
while hunting would take
place, there: would be no
rattlesnake killing featured
on the episode.
In addition, the show
has no ties to the World's
Largest Rattlesnake
Round-Up held each
March in Sweetwater, only
highlighting the hunt for
rattlesnakes. Sawyers has
been a Sweetwater Jaycee
for the past 20 years, most
notably serving as the
group's president on two
occasions.
Sawyers also noted that
while the camera crews
did slow the hunt down a
