what every intelligent taxpayer
in Houston knows c4i not be
maintained as fact—viz, "that
the Board of Aldermen are
odious to the people." Why if
the present Mayor and Council
had not been in place, we would
be wading knee deep in mud du-
ring wet weather, and strangers
visiting the city would have has-
tened from it as quick as possi-
ble. There is not a merchant on
Main street who has not endors-
ed the action of our City Coun-
cil in making the streets lit for
pedestrians to travel on. Oh,
Loke! Keep within the range
of veracity. Reporters should
only narrate facts.

Houston Mercury.—During our visit
to Houston on last week we chopped into
the Mercury office, where we met with
our old-time friend Charley Martin, wjio
is now ■' doing1! the local for the Mercury.
Charley is in the right place, and is mak-
ing a lively paper out of the concern.
Since the demise of the Telegraph the news-
paper field is divided between the Age and
the Mjeuxjhy, md with the staff employed
on the latter paper it is not tyffd to make
a correct guess as to who carries off the
palm. The Mercury, as its name denotes,
is a live paper, and will, no doubt, be ap-
preciated.—Haas Gladiator.
Thanks, friend, for the kindly
notice, but "honor to him to
whom honor is due," and Charley,
Who Sets 'Em Up sometimes, be-
ing in another department, (our
Merk having charge of the local,
insist? on the honor going
"where it belongs.

OF THB SOUTHWEST,
Thomas Webb, the oldest book-
seller in Dublin and probably in
Ireland, died a few days ago, at
the age of eighty-two. He had
been sixty years in business in
Dublin, and fifty years ago he
established, in connection with
his bookselling trade, a circula-
ting library of the same type as
Mudle's in London.
Postmaster General Creswell
seems quite confident of the
adoption of his postal savings
ban* iwoject In presenting the
scheme, he will give it a designa-
tion different from the British
system, as his plan will, in some
important particulars, be essen-
tially different. In all probabil-
ity the name suggested will be
that of national savings depos-
itories.
