important as applying to any legis-

New Yohk, Feb 18—The New
York and Philadelphia bill in the
interest of the National Road, pass-
ed the House by a vote of 41 to 8,
Archbishop McCloskey has ap-
. pointed the Rev Father Preston of

Several creditors to- the Bowles
Bros., state that the claims ia this
country against the firm amounts
to over thirty thousand dollars.
The Japanese claim is said to be as
much as sixty thousand. It is
claimed that Nathao Appleton,
whose property at Newport, has

Japanese, is liable as aportiaa bat
beyond that nothing eah be realized
from his estate. Little is expected
by the creditors.
In addition to the vessel American
Congress, which has already been
reported as probably lost, it is
stated that two otter ships, the
Lincoln and Sterling Castle, both
British, have probably met tbe same
fate. The Sterling Castle sailed
form New York Dec. 10, for London,
and had a orew of 25 men, Tbe
Lincoln sailjed Dec, 11, and had a
crew of 26 * en.^

the Yoakers special train, broke
lose from tbe train and rac as far
as Hastings,,and. rub into the down
train, making a complete wreck ot
the card and killing several pass-
engers, It appears that tbe lever
of the engine-was unable to .stop
the engine. The froqoded are be
ing removed to the hospital at
Yockers.

To the editor of the Picayunfc ;
^ Zhe following statement may be
of interest to yobr readers in regaid
to tbia road. The track-laying on
the New Orleans, Mobile ahd Texas
Railroad has now' reached a pOiot
tea and a half miles west of DoaSW-
aoDville.
The grading is complete to Bayon
Pigeoa—a distance of HI miles west
of Dooaidsoaville, At the Atcha®
falaya there are two miles finished,
and 58 miles west of Vermillioaville
is also ready for the iroa, with the
exception of bridging.
Major James is at Atchafalaya
with about six haodred men grad-
ing.
Mr. Dodge is west of Grand Riv-
er, miming two steam and oae hand
pile-driver, doing about 300 feet of
track ptliag per day, employing
about 150 men. He has about 8000
faefc of this work to do, between
Grand River aad Bayoa Pigeon, a
distance of niae miles.
Oapt ^Hawthorn having finished
the bridge at Grand River erossio^,
is now at Atchafalaya doing that
bridge.
S. B. Cole A Co. are'laying track.

o'clock last Friday morning, an of-
ficer, patrolling his beat near the
corner of High and Wylie streets,

ed and elegant lookiag woman stag-
gering along in a state of beastly ia-
toxication. She was taken in change
