the stockholders of The Haskell
& Throckmorton Telegraph &
Telephone Company will be held
at the First National Bank office
in the city of Seymour, on the
first Tuesday iu March, 1899, the
same being the 7th day of said
month, for the purpose of electing
a board of directors and the tran-
saction of such other business as
may properly come before it, after
which, on the «ame day and at
the same place, the ?nuual meet-
ing of the Board of Directors will
be held for the purpose of elect-
ing officers for the ensuing year
and to transact any other business
that may properly come before it.

der consideration on last Monday,
February 13tb, Mr. Perry moved to
suspeud the constitutional rule re-
quiring bills to be read on three sev-
eral days in each house, and that
House bill No. 145, that being the
prairie dog bill, be put upon its third
reading and final passage. The mo
Uon was lost by a vote of 73 yeas, 21
nays, not receiving the necessary con-
stitutional four-fifths majority.

The court convened last Monday
morning in regular session with all
the members preaent and transacted
the following business:
Approved the school report of the
treasurer.
Approved quarterly report of tax
collector.
Cancelled old court house bonds.
Ordered chauge in the Jacksboro
road.
Reports of all officers approved.
The presiding officers of elections
are as follows:

J. T. Cockerel 1; Round Timbers,
T. K. Hamby; Richland, M.J. Smith;
Shady OroVe, J. A. Carlisle; Fulda,
J. W Cruthirds; Gardner, W. B.

The following road overseers were
appoiuted:

E. A. McMath was appointed pub-
lic weigher.
The resignation of W. G. Adkins
as constable precinct No. 1, was ac-

given permission to sink a well iu
the street uear opera house.
Road petition of F. J. Brown for
third class road granted.
The rent of the building now oc-
cupied by D. M. Norwood was raised
from S3 to $5 per month.
Various accounts allowed.
The assessor was instructed to take
assess mailt at same aa last year.
Nat. P. Shaw was appointed con-
stable of precinct No. 1, aud the
bond was approved.
County judge given five days leave
of absence from the county.
Couuty treasurer was instructed to
call in court house bonds Nos. 20
and 21, and bridge bonds Nos. 4, 5
and 6.
Court house was insured for 3
years for 125,000, premium paid $625.
County judge was given $200 sal-
ary as superintendent of public in-
struction of the county. (Barber
voting against.)
B. F. Wilbanks was given contract
to rebuild jail yard.
Sheriff was allowed $31.30 ex-
penses in conveying J as. Richeson
to the insane asylum.
Hargroves property leased to M.
H. Jameson for one year for $60.
Ex officio salary fixed at the end of
each quarter.
Report of road supervisors ap-
proved.
County judge was appoiuted pur-
chasing agent for the county.
W. J. Hargroves was appointed to
fix chairs.
Coldest In History.
According to everybody and all
the thermometers the weather last
Saturday aud Sunday was the cold-
est eyer recorded in the couuty.
Saturday night the thermometer
registered 14 below. Sunday morn-
ing at 8 o'clock, after the sun was up
and the instrument hanging out in
the open, it registered 8 below. At
9 o'clock it was 6 below. At 10
o'clock 4 below. At 12 o'clock 4
above. Then it registered about 10
above the remainder of Sunday and
went down to six above during the
night and rose again to the freezing
point Monday.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Oliphint, a girl,

We are in receipt of the Clarendon
Agitator, Vol. 1, No. 1, our old friend
John R. Henson, editor and proprie-
tor. Bro. Hensou's many friends
here will be glad to kuow his where-
abouts, also that he is in the always
lucrative newspaper business. The
News exchanges with the Agitator
with pleasure and hopes it a long
life in the field of "Agitator," since
it is all that the word implies.
Dudley Petrie changes places with
his brother Charles. On last Tues
day Charley went to work in the
store of Dudley 1. Bran bam while
Dudley Petrie went to the ranch to
take Charley's place there. Charley's
many friends will be glad to see him
in the store again where he looks
perfectly natural.
Deputy U. S. Marshall Lancaster
hss wound up his mission here con-
nected with the Bulwer stock of
goods and returned to San Antonio
to-day. The stock invoiced at coat
price somewhere in the neighborhood
of $6000. But thoee in charge olf
taking the inventory were instructed
to figure the goods at about what
they would bring if sold under the
hammer and the figures turned iu
are about two thirds of the above
suin. R. C. Goree is in charge of the
store until the matter has been set-
tled in the U. S. district court which
will come up for trial in San Antoqio
on the 16th iust.—Yokum Times.

trip to Dallas this week.
It is reported that there is a case
of small pox at Vernon.
Col. W. G. Adkins returned last
Friday from a business trip to Gra-
ham.

Frank McClure, of Goree, was in
town Saturday attending to business
and made the News glad by setting

of Munday, Texas, was here Satur-
day closing up a laud deal with Col.
R. D. Goree.
Will Robinson, recently of the 4th
Texas infantry, stationed at San An-
touio, has returned home, having re-
ceived an honorable discharge.
Monroe Chambers visited Galves-
ton this week in order to see the bat-
tleship Texas and the wounds it re-
ceived during the war with the dons.
