Sewers, Pivemests and Street is-
provemeits all Defeated.
Aldermen Colemau, Carper Cur-
tis and Edens put themselves on
record as opposed to paving, op-
posed to sewers and opposed to
street improvement.
At the council last night an or-
dinance was reported favorably by
the ordinance committee, provid-
ing for the issuanoe of $30,000
coupon bonds, bearing 6 per cent,
maturing 20 years, the proceeds
of same to be expended in sewer-
ing the city, paving and improv-
ing the streets. After considera-
ble disoussion the entire ordin-
ance was defeated by the follow-
ing vote.
In favor of the improvement,
Phillips and Johnson.
Opposed to the improvement,
Colemau, Carper, Curtis and
Edens.
The Stenograph.
This machine, a cut of which,
and a description is found iu
another column is one of the most
wonderful creatures of the age.
It is reporting reduced to the very
aeure of simplicity. The machine
about ^thinks. The process of
reporting is no longer a great
mental effort, but by the aid of
this little instrument is redueed
to a simple mechiue process as
easy of accomplishment as the
playing ofa pinao. Mr McCam-
mon is the a^ent for their sale in
this city. There are some in op-
eration here. The system can be
learned without a teacher, and
while this office is very favorablp
impressed with the pencil sys-
tem, and use it entirely the Cour-
ier reporter has decided to adopt
the stenogrph believing it to be
the best yet invented.

John D. Lee, Esq., is favorably
mentioned by the Corsicana Cour-
ier as a candidate for Floater for
this district. He is said to be
one of the ablest lawyers of the
Corsicana bar, a staunch Demo-
crat, brilliant speaker, profound
reasoner and solid thinker. Na-
varro county is entitled to the
floator this year and the Bulletin
would like to see Navarro
county's man elected—Alvarado
Bulletin.
