purest and most effective preparations; and in eve-

Erery woman should know that if she is in poor, sickly,
debilitated condition of health, making existence a burden
to herself and a source of painful anxiety to her relatives
and friends, and perhaps, (horrible reflection!) entailing
and inflicting her own maladies and sufferings upon her
children, that it is her duty to understand why and.from
what cause her sufferings arise, thuc remedy and relief
may, while yet there is time, be availed of, the causes be
avoided in future, and her health restored, that she may
be fitted for the duties and capable of the enjoyments of
life.
Let every woman look at the emaciated form, the death-
like complexion, the deep-buried, lustreless eye, the sunk-
en cheek, the gloomy and depressed spirits, the shattered
nerves, the prostrate and helpless condition of many a
wife, mother, daughter, or sister, if not herself included,
within her own circle, whose days are days of agony, and
ask herself, "Must this continue? Must this be? Is
there no remedy? No relief? No hope?"
The remedy is by knowing the causes and avoiding
them, and knowing the remedies and benefiting by them.

Every complaint to which a woman is subject, from girl-
hood to womanhood, as also as wife and as mother, are ful-
ly described, with the causes, the symptoms, and also pro-
per mode of treatment, in a plain, simple, but in the m®st
chaste language, easily understood. And thus erery wo-
man can discover, by comparing her own symptoms with
those described, the nature, character, and causes of her
complaint; and be spared much anxiety and suffering.
The wife about becoming a mother has often need ©f
instruction and advice of the utmost importance to her
future health, in respect to which her sensitiveness for-
bids consulting a medical gentleman, will find sach In-
struction and advice, and also explain many symptoms
which otherwise would occasion anxiety or alarm.

ties peculiar <o the female system, which undermine the
health, the effects or which they are ignorant, and for
which their delicacy forbids seeking medical advice ? IIow
many suffer from prolapsus uteri (falling of the womb),
ariromjluor olbus(weakness,debility, Ac.)? How many
■re in constant agony for many months preceding confine-
ment? How many have difficult, if not dangerous deliv-
eries, and slow and uncertain recoveries? Some whose
lives are hazarded during such time, will each find in its
pages the means of prevention, amelioration and jrelief.
How maxj bitter moment?, how much anguish, might
have been spared to the sufferer, to her husband, to her
relatives, by the timely possession of this litUe volume-
It is impracticable to convey fully the various subjects
treated of, as they are of a nature strictly intended for
the married, or those contemplating marriage.
But no husband, wife or mother are excusable if they
•till continue in ignorance of those physiological laws, by
the knowledge of which their own health and happiness,
as also the future well-being of their children, are secured.
44 THE MARRIED WOMAN'S PRIVATE MEDICAL
COMPANION " is a standard work of established reputa-
tion, found classed in the catalogues of the great trade
sales in New York, Philadelphia, and other cities, and
sold by all the principal booksellers in the United States.
It was first published in 1847, since which time
FIVE HUNDRED THOUSAND COPIES *
bars been sold, of which there were upwards of
ONI? HUNDRED THOUSAND SICXT BT MAIL,
attesting the high estimation in which it is held as a relia-
ble popular Medical
BOOK FOR EVERY FEMALE;
the author having devoted his exclusive attention to the
treatment of complaints peculiar to females, in respect to
which he is yearly consulted by thousands.
In consequence of the universal popularity of the work,
as evidenced by its extraordinary sale, various Imposi-
tions have been attempted by imitations of title-page, spu-
rious editions, and surreptitious infringements of copy-
right, as well upon booksellers as upon the public; it has
been fouud necessary, therefore, to
CAUTION THE PUBLIC

The Gracfenburg Vegetable Pills.
There seems to have been a total misapplication
of the word purge in being always applied to the
one evacuation ; in like manner, all the pills are
| purgative compounds heretofore invented, have
1 had sole reference to the alvine discharges. But
| the true signification of the word, used physiolo-
! gically, is to cleanse the blood. According to the
| Americo Graefenberg theory, (see page 26 and
i also 45,) the bowels form but one of the great out-
i lets of the body; and when the blood is, so to
; speak, filtered by them, only one species of mor-
i bid matter is removed, and the •work of cleansing
j is but partially done, because the kidneys draw off
another distinct species of waste matter, and the
! skin exhales still another in the form of vapor-
! whereby also the surplus heat of the body is dis-
| sipated. Now, be it always remembered, that the
j bowels cannot do the work of the kidneys, and
j skin, nor can the latter perform the office of the
I former. If, however, the urine is started, and the
I pores opened, by a violent cathartic, it is only
I done by sympathetic irritation ; aud to do this, too
' great au impression is made on the vital powers,
and the medicine, in a great measure, defeats it-
self.
Now, herein consists the improvement, the
great superiority of the Graefenberg Vegetable
Pills over all others, that they operate, without
irritation, on all the excretions, purging the blood
not only by the bowels, but the liver, kidneys,
aud skin, and thus carry off diseased matter, of
all species, and through all the appropriate pas-
sages.
They readily dissolve in the stomach, ire speed-
ily taken up and diffused throughout the blood,
and with it visit every organ, blood-vessel, and
pore, stimulating each respectfully to its own pecu-
liar action, at the same time carrying with them a
tonic power, which imparts vigor to the organs ex-
cited. Pills operating on these principles need
not violently drench the bowels.
Another valuable consideration is, that special
pains have been taken in the preparation of these
pills, top-event nausea, and griping ; so that when
' a person takes them he is not disgusted, nor re-
minded of them, until he is pleasantly invited to
the stool; meanwhile the pent-up, muddy urine,
begins to flow, free and clear, and the skin to re-
sume the softness and moisture of health. Ano-
ther very important characteristic is, that, unlike
all others, they do not deaden the parts acted upon,
and thus induce a necessity for a speedy renewal
and increase of the dose: quite the contrary, for
we know persons of stolid, l3*mx hatic temperament,
who at first required seven or eight pills to oper-
| ate on them, but after a time found five or six to
answer.
1 They are entirely vegetable, with the exception
| of a trifle of iron, to give the blood that florid hue,
| which adds the finishing charm to health; they are
I also free from any narcotic property. To snm them
j up briefly, they are cathnrtic—acting on the whole
I length of the intestinal canal—antibilious, anti-
; dyspeptic, diuretic, diaphoretic, deobstruent, alter-
1 alive, tonic, and antiemetic. They excite general
: action, and contain nothing that can possibly in-
j jure the most delicate.
j From the peculiar combination of ingredients,
these pills are particularly valuable for the Pre-
! vention and cure of Fevers in general, all Billions
and Liver complaints, Jaundice, General debility,
| common and Sick Headache, Despepsia, Heart
i burn, Costivcness, Griping, Urinary diseases, Ob-
I and Shoes, Cravats and Handkerchiefs of every va-
riety, plain, colored antj'fancy.
