those (all citizens of the United States) who afterwards Nto support
their rebellion are regarded only as adventurers. 'And if ty in Texas
is now endeavoring to effect its incorporation with the I States, it
is from the consciousness of their notorious ineapability to and constitute
anr independent nation, without their having changed situation,
nor acquired any rights to separate themselves from ttieir or country.
His Excellency the Provisional President, resting on this deiviction, is
obliged to prevent an aggression, unprecedented in the annahe world,
from being consummated; and if it be indispensable for tbxican nation
to seek security for its rights at the expense of the drs of war,
it will call tipon God, and rely on its own efforts for the de of its just
cause. The Governnment of the undersigned, neverthlels:ters itself
with the hope that the Government of the/United States wid off from
its country and from ours the deplorable consequences oapture, by
preserving the amicable relations which 'is Excellency tbsident so
ardently desires to maintain, and will tutls save the glo Republic

having no other authority than the public newspapers, isen to be
without foundation, and upon which rumor his excellency iddressed
a very strong note to the undersigned, another is receivee similar
character, based upon no better authority. The direct threat Lr, which
his excellency makes, precludes the undersigned from offeriy explanation
whatever upon the subject. With a proud man or al nation,
the language of menace is not only unavailing, but has an itble tendency
to defeat its object. The Government of the underi has no
passion for war, foreign or domestic. It seeks a different pf glory.
Still less does that Government desire war with Mexico. Biny thing
could excite such a feeling, it will be the constant repetition oft threats,
alike incompatible, in the judgment of the undersigned, wit respect
due to his own Government and to that of Mexico; and th{ersigned
requests that they'may not be repeated. If intended for intiron, they
will have no effect; and if as a warning, they are not nece for his
country is always in a condition to meet any emergency.
The undersigned begs leave to add, that.'" the glorious Repfounded
