designated as HEART SUNDAY
in Bastrop, according to Mrs.
Jeff Osborn, secretary of the
Bastrop County Heart Associa-
tion.
Heart and circulatory diseases
are the leading cause of death
in the United States. Each
year they cause more than half
of all deaths nearly 850,000 in
the I'. S. in Fjr>f>. This is al-
most twice as many a- are cau.-
ed by the next five causes of
death combined.
No age group i.- immune from
hi- most serious of all threats
to America's health. Among
the estimated 10,000,000 persons
affected in the U. S. are ap-
proximately half ti million chil
dren of school age. Among
those who died of cardiovascular

trop High School auditorium,
with ladies from Elgin, Smith-
viile. Kockne and Bastrop model-
ing fashions from Snyder-Chen

Sheriff Posse
Officers Elected
Riley Hatfield was elected
president of the Lost Pines She-
riff's Posse at the first meet-
ing of the year held on January
14.
Other officers elected at this
time were: Vernon Smith, vice-
president; Mrs. Vernon Smith,
secretary-treasurer; Mrs. Riley
Hatfield, reporter; Miss Deena
Joyce Smith, sweetheart; 1. R.
(N'ig) Hoskins, captain; Julius
Marek of Elgin, co captain; first
Lieutenant, Raymond Hoskins;
Sr. second Lieutenant, Warren
Higgins, Jimmy Willenborg, se-
cond Lieutenant; and Bob Bark-
er. serjeant-at-arms.
The Posse was organized in
the early summer of 1955 by
Sheriff Hoskins, who has striv
id since that turn to keep it to-
gether.
The Posse has great plans for
this year, one of them being
new uniforms. Teen-agers are
invited to join the Posse and
participate in the weekly drill
practice and performances at
various rodeos and other public
gathi rings throughout the year.
Drill practice nights will be
decided tonight (Thursday) at
a business meeting of the organ-
ization.
