In Ion < lo ilv pe.'pli of Bastrop,
and Ihe money borrowed for its
construction must l>e paid back out
of the hospital income. Because it
is a non-protil inslitulion, it can
operate with lower rates than some
hospitals that offer similar ser-
vices. But oven at that, it must
be prepared lo meet the steadily
rising cosls of food, labor, main-
tenance, and other necessary items,
and to look forward to needed ex-
pansions and additions.
Its standards are higher than
might ordinarily be necessary, be-
calm Medicare demands thai cer-
tain standards be maintained. Al-
though this increases (he cost of
operation, il also means that all
of the hospital patienls receive the
benefit of those same high stand-
ards.
It costs an amazing amount <>l
money lo operate such an institu-
tion, with Ihe conveniences, the
medical care and all of Ihe ser-
vices that we want for ourselves
and on- family when sickness j
collies. All hospital charges sel j
for prevenlaliv i medicine, lab
