With potential for a dra-
matic film with elements
of "Mystic River" and
"Mysterious Skin," the
documentary is power-
ful as is.
While Boston's
Catholic Church is being
rocked by revelations, in Toledo, Ohio, firefight-
er Tony Comes moves his wife and two children
into a new house, only to discover Dennis Gray,
a former priest who molested him as a teenager,
lives five doors down.
The presiding bishop, who has covered up
Gray's crimes, gives Comes the apology he
demands but lies that no other allegations have
been made against Gray. When he learns the
truth, Comes goes public. He and three other vic-
tims (one of them gay) discuss what Gray did to
them and how it's affected their lives.
As the film progresses, media exposure and
stirring up old memories take their toll on Tony
and his marriage. The bittersweet ending leaves
you wondering what in God's name the church
thought it was doing in giving Gray and priests
like him continued access to children.

Lesbian couples contemplating parenthood
will want to see "Making Grace" ($24.95, First
Run Features) for positive reinforcement.

Journal-like, it details the I MAKING GRACE
process Ann and Leslie
Krsul-Sullivan, a per-
sonable pair of poster
girls, go through after
electing the turkey-
baster route.
The film skips over
the first six months of
gestation. To hear the women tell it, they skipped
over them, too, waiting until then to start Lamaze
classes and planning a baby shower.
A few friends and family members make
appearances. But Catherine Gund's film focuses
mostly on the two women, who address the cam-
era separately and together and engage in osten-
sibly spontaneous conversations, each designed
to convey certain information.
Grace Ann Emerson is born May 3,2001, and
the film continues up to her first birthday party.
Everything seems to work out, from Ann being
the one who wants to get pregnant to Leslie
being willing and able to be a "stay-at-home
mom."
The only hint of conflict comes from Ann's
sister's initial hesitation about telling her own
young children Grace has two mommies.
While Gund adds visual variety with ferry
rides and street scenes, "Making Grace" tells far
more than it shows. It makes lesbian parenting
look easy.

DANCE DOCUMENTARY
Unearthing archival footage, filmmakers Dan Geller and Dayna Goldfine delve into one
of the most influential dance companies of all time. The documentary "Ballets Russes,"
which opens today at the Inwood Theatre, traces Ballet Russe's Diaghilev-era founding
and the legendary productions starring gay dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. The 1930s were '
turbulent — choreographers George Balanchine and Leonlde Massine split Into two
rival groups fighting for the famous name. Their 1930s and '40s marathon American
tours amazed audiences with the dancers' artistry and glamour. Enormous egos
and financial problems closed the company in the 1960s, but its influ-
ence is still felt today. Some of the film's richest footage consists
of interviews with surviving dancers, including two of
the "Baby Ballerinas" from the original company
Opens today at Landmark's Inwood
Theatre. 1 hr., 58 min. Not rated.
