Dallas gay and lesbian film festival kicks off 8th year
There really aren't any big changes in store
for Out Takes Dallas 2006. The film festival,
which runs Oct. 27 through Nov. 4, celebrates
its eighth anniversary. But there isn't a discern-
able theme or abstract filmic campaign — like
"in focus" or "Films R Us,"
Instead, it's just a nine-day marathon of
queer movies: 93 features, shorts and documen-
taries lighting up the screens at Landmark's
Magnolia Theatre. And it's not just movies —
Out Takes has also scheduled three mixers.
• Women's Mixer. On Saturday, enjoy drinks
and complimentary appetizers at Club Nikita in
the West Village before catching "Laughing
Matters ... More." Oct. 28. Mixer from 5 p.m.
to 7 p.m., "Laughing Matters ... More" at 7:25
p.m.
• Youth Mixer. On Sunday, before the screen-
ing of "Fat Girls," grab some coffee at
Starbucks in the West Village. Oct. 29: mixer at
4 p.m., "Fat Girls" at 6:55 p.m.
• Men's Mixer. Next Saturday, enjoy drinks
and complimentary appetizers at Club Nikita in
the West Village before catching the double bill
of "20 Centimeters" and "Tanguero," Oct. 28.
Mixer from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., "20 Centimeters"
at 7 p.m.
And there's a special Halloween night of
scary gay movies.
This week's edition of Dallas Voice reviews
selected films that are being screened the first
week of the festival: Oct 27-Nov.3. Films
screening during the last final weekend will be
reviewed in next week's edition.

MAYBE WE SHOULD WAIT: Soulmates put sex on ice in "Long Term Relationship," which screens Friday at 7 p.m.
Long-Term Relationship
"Long-Term Relationship" is about two guys
who meet and fall in love but date for a month
before having sex. And when they do, it's lousy.
They continue seeing each other, but the sex
doesn't improve. I'm not saying sex is the be-all
and end-all of a gay relationship, but for two
young, healthy gay men, if sex isn't going to be
at all, they may as well end it. If they don't get it
with each other, they're going to get it without
each other.
New in L.A., Adam (Windham Beacham)
meets Glenn (Matthew Montgomery) through a
personal ad. The actors go through the emotions
but never look like a couple. Montgomery in par-
ticular could probably do a great one-man show
but has zero chemistry with the other actors.
Supposedly a romantic comedy, "Long-Term
Relationship" isn't very funny, and the romance
is mostly of the tortured-soul-agonizing-to-drip-
py-piano-music variety.
Writer-producer-director Rob Williams could
have used some objective eyes to tell him when
things weren't working. And he should have
scheduled some more rehearsal time to so his
cast could get used to each other.
"Long-Term Relationship" isn't painful to
watch but it falls frustratingly short of the mark
in too many areas.
