exas Stonewall board asks Bailey to resign
5-4 vote comes in wake of public lewdness arrest,
but it remains unclear if group's president will comply
By John Wright Staff Writer
The executive board of Texas
Stonewall Democrats has asked
President Shannon Bailey to resign in
the wake of his recent arrest on a
charge of public lewdness.
During a special meeting called to
discuss the matter Aug. 25 in Austin,
the board voted 5-4 to request Bailey's
resignation, according to Stonewall
Democrats of Dallas President Jesse
Garcia,
The 49-year-old Bailey, a longtime
local gay Democratic activist, was
arrested June 14 after two vice unit
officers observed him performing oral
sex on another suspect in White Rock
Lake Park, according to Dallas Police
Department reports.
Garcia, a member of the TSD exec-
utive board, said Bailey, who did not
attend the meeting, was sent a letter
outlining the board's request. TSD is
the largest gay political group in the
state.
"We did decide as a board to for-
mally ask him to resign, and Sept. 2
we're going to
have a follow-up
phone call to dis-
cuss the outcome
of his answer/'
Garcia said. "If
he refuses, then
we'll deal with it
in the next call."
Bailey did not
return a phone call seeking comment.
If Bailey does not resign, the execu-
Shannon Bailey
tive board could terminate his mem-
bership with a two-tbirds vote, accord-
ing to the group's bylaws. However,
Garcia suggested the board may also
consider changes to those bylaws.
The Texas Stonewall Democrats
executive board is made up of the
organization's four state officers, pres-
idents from each local chapter and
national board members. Garcia said
the board has 11 voting members.

Idaho's Craig joins growing list
of Republicans facing troubles
From Staff and Wire Reports
Under fire from leaders of bis own party, a
Republican senator who had been accused of
lewd conduct in a men's room declared Tuesday,
"I am not gay" and said the only thing he did
wrong was plead guilty to a criminal charge.
"I am not gay. I never
have been gay," Sen. Larry
Craig, R-Idaho, 62, said at
a news conference
Tuesday, Aug. 28, in Boise
with his wife, Suzanne, at
his side. "I did nothing
wrong at the Minneapolis
airport."
Craig's defiant news
conference came as Senate
Republican leaders in Washington called for an
ethics committee review into his involvement in
a police sting operation this summer in the air-
port men's room.
His is the latest in a series of scandals involv-
ing Republicans that threaten to further tarnish
the party's reputation. Craig joins other GOP
senators facing ethical and legal troubles.

LGBr leaders
encouraged by
meeting with
Dallas mayor
Leppert addresses representatives
from 15 groups at COH
By David Webb Staff Writer
Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert met with leaders
representing 15 LGBT groups at the Cathedral of
Hope on Tuesday morning, Aug. 28.
Gay leaders saw the get-acquainted meeting
with the mayor as the first step in forging a
strong relationship similar
to the one they had
enjoyed with former
Mayor Laura Miller.
Everyone left the meet-
ing encouraged by
Leppert's apparent will-
ingness to embrace the
LGBT community equally
with other groups, several
of the gay leaders said.
"I think we are definitely on the right path to
having that type of relationship/* said Dennis
Coleman, regional director for the South Central
Office of Lambda Legal, which is located in
Dallas. "I think the mayor is definitely open to
working with our community and open to listen-
ing to our concerns.
Coleman, who coordinated the meeting, said
