THE HISTORY OF ANNEXATION-.
BARRINGTO,N, NOVEMBER 13th, 1847.
To HAMILTON STUART, ESQ., Editor of Civilian and Gazette.
DEAR SIR :--M attention has lately been called to two
letters of Ex-President Tyler, published in the newspapers,
assailing 'exas and her late Executive government, as well
as the European Agents accredited to it; and though the
business of my farm demands a constant attendance on my
part and leaves me consequentlly but little leisure for the purpose,
I do not feel at liberty to refuse the many appeals
whichi have been made to me by individu'al friends, or so far
to disregard the public sentiment in this country, communicated
through the'medium of the public press, as to remain
silent and suffer very grave charges from such high aut)hority
to pass unnoticed and unrefuted. A natural disposition
to go to the dlefence of my adopted country, whenever that
country might be assailed, and a sense of tlhe duty I owe her
as one of her citizens, forces me to break a resolution I had
formed, on retiring from office, to say nothing; to leave the
angry passions of men andi the ten thousand slanders to
which they gave rise, the former to subside in due time, and
the latter to pass quietly to oblivion. Attacks which only
affected myself, a,nd made upon me as the head of the Cabinet
or chief Executive of Texas, would have been secure
of meeting with no attention, for on retiring fromr office I
appealed my own cause fromr the excitements of the then
present to the calm judgment of posterity, and was willing
to abide the award. In my valedictory address 1 said(
