'Hip Hop for HIV' concert announced
Dallas Deputy Mayor Pro-Tem Dwaine
Carraway, Rickey Smiley of Radio One and rep-
resentatives from KBFB 97.9 EM The Beat radio
station, the city of Dallas and the MLK Jr.
Family Clinic this week announced "Hip Hop
for HIV," a new HIV/ AIDS educational initia-
tive that will kick off with a concert Sept. 14,
from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., on the steps of Dallas City
Hall, 1500 Marilla St.
The concert will feature international, nation-
al and local hip hop artists including David
Banner, Mike Jones, Bun B, Day 26, Pleasure P,
Young Berg, Trap Star and more. The artists will
all emphasize the importance of knowing one's
HIV status and will encourage educational and
prevention efforts.
The concept of "testing for tickets" will be a
central part of the effort, which organizers hope
will become an annual event. Testing sites will
be designated through the Metroplex and
everyone who is tested for HIV at one of these
sites will receive a free ticket.
CaiTaway said, "Testing for tickets is one cre-
ative way to address the disease, specifically in
those in the 15-to-30 age group. People can
leam their status then be proactive about main-
taining a healthy lifestyle, taking preventive
measures and becoming more informed about
the social and medical services available."
Carraway said the concert is part of a Teen
Summit Program launched last year.
