clients should give thanks next week that Cyn-
thia Tingley was born with bright red hair.
Tingley, a straight volunteer who's overseeing
the annual Thanksgiving feast at R( I J, is the
cousin of Lanny Noland, a gay RCD client who
began the tradition before dying from AIDS five
years ago.
Each year since then, Noland's mother, Diane
Smith, has overseen the meal, with Tingley serv-
ing as one of the primary assistants. But this year,
Smith was too ill to head up the effort, so Tingley
is doing the honors,

This week across the globe, more than 200 gath-
erings are taking place to remember those who were
murdered because of a differing sense of gender.
Friday, Nov. 20, marks the 11th annual Transgender
Day of Remembrance;, which began in honor of
slain transgender woman Rita Hester in 1999.
For most, the TDOR event will not likely hit too
close to home. It may be just another LGBT event
that we can't the find time for.
But to others, like transgender woman "Patsy
Masters" of Richardson, the event is a stark re-
minder of how lucky some are to have escaped the

Candlelight vigil set in wake of
murders of 2 gay teens in 1 week

Local activists have organized a candlelight vigil
to be held Sunday, Nov. 22, at 6:15 p.m., at the inter-
section of Cedar Springs Road and Throckmorton
Street, in front of the former Crossroads Market, in
memory of Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado of Puerto
Rico and Jason Mattison Jr. of Baltimore, two LGBT
youth murdered in separate incidents last week.
Those attending the vigil will gather in front of
the former Crossroads Market and march in silence
to the Legacy of Love Monument at the intersection
of Cedar Springs Road and Oak Lawn Avenue
where speakers will address the crowd.
Speakers will include Stephen B. Sprinkle of Brite
Divinity School at Texas Christian University,
