"We're all in this together," the Rev. Carol West,
pastor of Celebration Community Church in Fort
Worth, declared
this week. "I'm a
very big believer
in community,
whether the com-
munity is in Fort
Worth or Dallas or
Gun Barrel City or
wherever. It's all
about commu-
nity."
And this week,
the community
that West has
spent the last 24 years working to help recognized
her efforts as the co-chairs of the 2010 Black Tie
Dinner announced that West has been named as
the recipient of the dinner's Kuchling Humanitar-
ian Award.
"It's just a tremendous honor," West said Tues-
day, May 25, speaking by cell phone from Cedar
Creek Lake where she was vacationing.
"I knew Ray Kuchling [the man who was the
first recipient of the award and for whom it is
named], I've known all the recipients through the
years and have worked with them, and it is an-
honor to be in their company," she said. "I was
pretty surprised."
In a statement released by BTD, West said that

STANDING ON PRINCIPLE | Retired SMU professor Lee Nicora, left, protested at ExxonMobil's
shareholder's meeting on Wednesday, May 26, on principle, but for Drey Zalaquett, who drove

Full House OKs amendment to
repeal anti-gay military policy;
Armed Services committee sends
amendment to Senate floor
JOHN WRIGHT I Online Editor

A proposal that would begin the process of re-
pealing "don't ask don't tell" cleared two key leg-
islative hurdles late Thursday, with both the
Senate Armed Services Committee and the full
House of Representatives approving the measure
in two votes that came just a few hours apart.
The proposal, in the form of an amendment to
a $760 billion defense spending bill for Fiscal Year
2011, still must pass the full Senate, where some
Republicans have threatened a filibuster.
Under the plan, supported by President Barack
Obama, a DADT repeal wouldn't take effect until
the Pentagon completes a study on its impact, ex-
pected in December. Then, the president, the de-
fense Secretary and the chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff would have to certify that the re-
peal won't hurt the military's ability to fight.
Finally, after those two requirements are met,
there would be a 60-day waiting period.
