was a great help to me in the cause of me getting lined up with the Texas Rangers. While Ben and I were in camp those three weeks, men from around would come see us and some of them would want to shoot with us. One day there was some fellows from town came out to our headquarters, one of them wanted to shoot with me. We made a kind of a target on a little mound about 300 yards away. It was a pile of rocks about the size of a man’s body. I said to this man let me see how close you can hit to this pile of rocks. So he shot away and hit about 50 yards this side of the Rocks.
I said, well you will have to shoot again as I know I can best that. So he shot again and hit at the foot of the mound this time. Well, I took my 45 and cut down on the pile of rocks and could see the dust fly off of the rocks. He would not shoot any more.
