This is"Juneteenth"and Hobby has been hereto campaignTSj
for governorship. He spoke to a large crowd at the air dom
at 8:30 p.m.-J
took a bunch of boys ranging in age from 9 tp 14
out to the couAityt to hoe cotton -auYof last week.
The six boys made $5.00 that day. Then on Wednesday I
took another bunch,some of whom were the same as the day
beforehand hoed two days,camping out one night. This time
we were fired twice for unsatisfactory work. It was very hard
to get the boys to do their work right and I couldn't
blage the farmers for not wanting us longer. We do not -e
regret having gone out,however,for we had a great time in
camp and in the swimming hole. We took our rations with ua
$4.85 worth,but the boys didn't make enough to come out
P--'n on the groceries. Friday night of the Baptist meeting
wsB "Cotton Choppers' night" and we had some of the boys
there,though not as many as we had expected.
Last Sat. I went to Spur,prwached Sunday,went to Lubboc
Monday with Mr.McNeil,returning to Spur Tuesday morning at
5 o'clock,and then on back to Stamford Tues.afternoon.
We have just about completed arrangements to group
Stamford and Spur for the time being for the purpose of
conserving man power and money in this time of stress.
A big fire has just started on the square in the Dial
barber shopLATER: They have put out the fire
allowing it to burn only one building,in which were locatthree
businesses
Barber shop, Tailor shop, and Orr's
Store.
tviss~ Carrie Knox Willians came the first of this week
and has taken up work in the Sanitariaum
