U. S. Army Primary Helicopter School
Camp Wolters, Texas
( August 4, 1961) Colonel Jack Norris assumed command of Camp Wolters replacing
Colonel John L Inskeep, who retired July 31. The new commanding officer and commandant of
the U. S.Army Primary Helicopter School recently returned from Korea where he served as
Aviation Officer for Headquarters, Eighth U. S. Army.
Following two years of college a Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington, the colonel
entered into the U.S. Military Academy in 1935. He commissioned a second lieutenant of
Infantry upon graduation in June 1939.
During World War II he saw combat with the 2nd Infantry Division (Indian Head) as
commander of the Second Battalion, 38th Infantry Regiment. While with the 38th Infantry, the
colonel participated in five European campaigns; Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes-Alsace,
Rhineland and Central Europe.
Following the war Colonel Norris attended the Command and General Staff College, at
Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and the British Staff School, Haifa, Palestine.
From December 1946 until June, 1948 while an ROTC instructor duty, he was professor
of Military Science and Tactics of the Senior Schools in Ogden. Utah.
Following 15 months of studies at Georgetown University, he served on the Army General
Staff in Washington, D. C. until June 1953. It was during this tour of duty he was promoted to
colonel.
After completing the War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa., in August 1953 Colonel Norris
was transferred to Alaska, serving first as Operations and Training Officer on the Joint Staff of the
Alaskan Command and later as commanding officer of the 53rd Regimental Combat Team, U. S.
Army Alaska.
Returning back to the United States in August 1956, Colonel Norris completed fixed-wing
and rotary-wing training at the U.S. Army Aviation School, Fort Rucker, Alabama. He received
his wings in 1957.
