PREFACE
The inventory of the Gaines County courthouse records was
begun by Dr. Roger Olien and graduate history students from the
University of Texas of the Permian Basin in June, 1974. Project
staff completed, updated, and verified the survey in July, 1980.
For their assistance in making this inventory possible, we
would like to thank the following officials: County Judge Max
Townsend, County Clerk Frieda Nichols, District Clerk Wilma
McNew, Tax Assessor-Collector Johnnie Stanley, Justice of the
Peace Precinct 1 Lorine Basham, Sheriff Ed Welch, County Treasurer
Pauline Ancell, and County Auditor Mary Baldwin.
