Historic cabins seen at ] Lockne s Hi big ark
By Terry Hagerty
Staff Writer
FM 535 is a pretty enough
drive by itself — winding
through scenic farm and
ranch land — from Rockne
to Smithville.
But an added bonus for
those wanting to peruse a bit
of local history is a grouping
of log cabins, some dating
back to the mid-1800s, in
Rockne"s Hilbig Park. The
park is located just east of
the Texas 20/FM 535 inter-
section, m what is consid-
ered the "downtown" por-
tion of the small commu-
nity. (Sacred Heart Catholic
Church is just behind the
cabins).
The two main buildings
are the John T. Lehman
cabin and the Philip Goertz
cabin, the two men being
among the first German
Catholic immigrants to set-
tle along Walnut Creek. The
Lehman cabin was moved
to several sites, including
Bastrop, and eventually dis-
assembled before members
of the Rockne Historical
Association bought the origi-
nal logs and had the cabin
rebuilt at Hilbig Park.
On Dec. 1 the associa-
tion received a $5,000 grant
from Bluebonnet Electric
Cooperative for the restora-
tion of a log smokehouse
located behind the two cab-
ins. The smokehouse dates to
circa 1900.
The smokehouse, donat-
ed by the children of Ray
and Marian Lee, was built at
the time W.O. Weber (1858-
1926) and his wife Matilda
(1865-1935) built a home for
their daughter, Francis, on
property bought in 1881.
The smokehouse will
include a fire pit, hooks for
hanging slabs of bacon and
ham hocks, along with details
of how meat was cured.
A plaque on each of the
two main cabins informs that
the immigrants were instru-
mental in forming the com-
munity that would later be
named Rockne. Goertz lived
from 1825-1900 and Lehman
from 1832-1892.
Goertz and his wife
Catherine Hartman built the
"dogtrot log" cabin on a site
one mile north of its present
location. It served as resi-
dence and meeting place for
settlers.
The Lehman cabin was
built by John T. and his
father, Daniel Lehman, on
a site at the intersection of
Texas 20 and FM 535 — a
short distance from its cur-
rent location.
According to historians
the Lehmans were the first
family to settle along Walnut
Creek. Lehman and his first
wife, Maria Anna Eichhom,
and his second wife, Rosina
Brasch, raised seven chil-
dren.
Lehman served with
the 17th Texas Infantry of
the Confederate States of
America, fighting in six
battles.

The Rockne Historical Association will use a $5,000 grant from Bluebonnet Electric
to refurbish this smokehouse.
