I. COUNJTY COMIvISSIONIIRS COURT
The functional and corporate affairs of the Texas county have always
been administered by a supervisory court. Under laws in force for 3 years
following the organization of Gregg County in 1873,'the supervisory court,
composed of the justices of the peace of the county, was called the county
court. The presiding officer of the court was the justice of the
peace resident at the county seat.1 The district clerk was clerk of the
court.2 The first meeting of the county court of Gregg County was held
July 21, 1873, 3
Since 1876 administrative pourers of the county have been vested in
the county commissioners court, composed of the county judge and four
county commissioners, elected at each biennial general election. The
county is divided into four commissioners' precincts, and one commissioner
is elected in each.4 The county judge is chosen from the county
at large.5 The county clerk is clerk of the court.6
The records of the Gregg County Commissioners Court are located in
the office of the county clerk, on the first floor of the courthouse, unless
otherwise indicated.
