ate and constitutional business, and in which we have agreed
to assist her by furnishing the means as far as we may be
able. We do most earnestly recommend that this body ap-
point no missionary for the next year, but rely upon and con-
tide in the Convention, as we have ever done, to do this
work for us. Respectfully submitted,

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION.
The committee to whom was referred the subject of edu-
cation, and the condition of Baylor University, beg leave to
report that, in no period of our history, as an Association,
have we had such abundant cause for encouragement and for
gratitude, as during the past year. The interest of our
brethren in the cause of education is every year becoming
deeper. The conviction of its necessity is becoming strong-
er and more pervading, not only for our rising ministry, but
for our great community-for ourselves and for our children.
Never has there been such a desire for religious and denom-
inational books, and especially for a right understanding of
the true spirit and meaning of that Book of Books, the bles-
sed Bible. Never such a desire on the part of parents to
give their children the facilities for obtaining a sound and
polished education. Hence, notwithstanding the failure of
the crops for the last three years, there has been no diminu-
tion of the number of students in either department of our
beloved University, but, instead, a constant increase. And
while the prayer has gone up to the Lord of the harvest for
more laborers, the disposition to sacrifice for the education
of those whom the Lord is giving us, accompanies the prayer.
Our University, while it is gaining a stronger hold on the
great head of the denomination, is at the same time com-
manding a higher position in the confidence of the public
generally. In view of all these facts, have we not cause for
gratitude and for hope? Gratitude for what the Lord has
already done for us, and hope for what he will still continue
to do. May we not hope, in view of the causes already in
operation, and relying on the spirit of God to direct us,
that the Baptist denomination in Texas shall, ere long, pre-
sent to the world not only an efficient and learned ministry,
but give a wise ministry of marked intelligence, *horoughly
educated in whatever is useful and good, and especially in
the science of human redemption ?
JAMES HUCKINS, Chairman.
