President addresses students' concerns

Texas Wesleyan President
Dr. Harold Jeffcoat
answered students' ques-
tions March 6 about issues
ranging from university
accreditation to campus
renovations.
During the forum,
Jeffcoat fielded questions
on student body enroll-
ment, accreditation by the
Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools, the
repaving of Wesleyan
Street, the status of the law
school, degree plans, renovation
of the Law Sone building and
Mass Communication depart-
ment technology upgrades.
Jeffcoat said that enrollment
decreased from the prior year
and that the uni-
versity is provid-
ing 32 percent less
tui-tion assistance
in scholarships
than last year., due
to less enrollment.
"There was a
52 percent reten-
tion rate when I
came here. The
people we gave
money to are
gone," he said.
"It's not how big we are but it's
whether we can balance the
Dr. Harold
Jeffcoat
budget. It doesn't pay to give
financial aid and half the stu-
dents are gone."
The university's acceptance
standards are rising, Jeffcoat
added. "We want to tighten up
freshman enrollment, tighten up
on indicators of success. We are
going to make inroads for com-
munity college transfers because
they have tremendous indicators
for success."
When asked about the status
of the university's accreditation
with SACS, Jeffcoat said TWU
has been "completely accredited
since December 2001."
Officials will come to Texas
Wesleyan for SACS' normal 10-
year visit in April, he said.
explaining. "There is no reason
why we will not be fully accred-
ited'for another 10 years."
Regarding the ongoing
reconstruction of Wesleyan
Street, Jeffcoat said the universi-
ty has had a hard time getting
the city to start work. However,
he said this may partly be due to
the university's having asked the
city to delay repavement during
other renovations on campus. "It
is difficult to get on the city's
time line," he said. "I have a
meeting with the mayor today."
The search for a new dean
at the law school is under way.
As for the law school's possible
sale, Jeffcoat said that the uni-

Several improvements to
campus buildings will take place
during the months of March,
April and May.
The Nurse Anesthesia
Building is scheduled to be com-
pleted by early May, and renova-
tions to the Polytechnic United
Methodist Church will start in the
next few weeks.
Wesleyan has also received a
$200,000 grant from the Amon G
Carter Foundation to make "cos-
metic" repairs to the Dan
Waggoner and Sid Richardson
buildings.
Repairs to Wesleyan Street
and the renovation of the Thad
Smotherman Theatre in the Law
Sone Building, depending on the
city of Fort Worth, according to
the Human Resources
Department. Steve Roberts, vice
president of Administrative
Services, said he is not sure when
the city of Fort Worth will start
repairs on Wesleyan street. "The
city has told me that they are
going to completely resurface that
street with new curbs, gutters and
sidewalks," said Roberts, "but
they have given me several start

Funding for library

The Texas Legislature is
considering ending the Tele-
communications Infrastruc-
ture Fund (TIF) program,
which could mean the loss of
65 databases in the Texas
Wesleyan Library.
One of the yellow pack-
ets placed in the library
details how Texas Wesleyan
has benefited from the TIF
program. Grants from pro-
gram have funded the pur-
chase of the online SI RSI
Library catalog, a network
color printer/copier and the
electronic databases through
the Tex Share database pro-
gram at low cost.
The TIF program was
created by the Texas
Legislature in 1995 as a grant
fund to encourage telecom-
munications in such facilities
as libraries and public
schools, according to the
Telecommunications
Infrastructure Fund Board
Web site on the Internet at
www.tifb.state.tx.us.
Many mobile and tele-
com companies such as
Sprint and AT&T fund it,
according to the Web site.
According to the TIF
Board's Web site, Texas
Wesleyan has been awarded
more than $180,000 in TIF
program money.
