THE MIIEOU WEEKLY MOItTOIt.

Saturday, Dec. 15, 1888.
Entered at the post office as second-

.Tim Kurt Worth Gazette is out
in her new holiday suit looking as
bewitching as a bride. The Ga-
tette ih getting a long way up to-

Southern journals and merits well
the place.
Thk treatment that Rutherford
B. Hays has received at the hands
of the Republican party during the
last eight years is nothing short of
a confession of guilt by that party
in the great case of the theft of the
presidency in 1876.
The new State capitol has been
formally received. Statement of
cost shows that it cost the contrac-
tors $3,264,580, this being a frac-
tion over one dollar per acre for
tho 3,000,000 acres of land paid the
syndicate for the building.
Bho. Bam., of the Winsboro Mes-
senger, has about concluded that
he has at least 400 dead beats on
his subscription book, but he has
postponed the compiling of the
list until January 1st, by which
time lie hopes the number Mil lie
reduced a little.

"Do You Want War?":
The Democrats are trying to
steal the Federal Houbc of Repre-
sentatives. No one doubts it. No
one denies it. To-day the news.
comes that they have robed West
Virginia of a duly elected Republi-
can congressman. They will try
to rob Louisiana. They have
cheated a North Carolina Republi-
can out of his seat in a district
which is notoriously Republican
by S000 majority. They have
given certificates to more than half
a score of Democrats whom the
people have defeated.
The country is in danger, and
we aie speaking soberly, with self
restraint, but in terrible earnest,
when we sound this note of warn-
ing. The Democrats shall not be
permitted to consummate this
crime. This country is not the
home of theives and thugs and
plunderers. . It is not to be eon-
trolled by traitors. It is not to
have its sufferage and its freedom
destroyed by violence. The Dem-
ocratic party will not be permitted
to steal the government any more
than they were permitted to break
it up by force of arms. Crimes
against the ballot box will be put
down by the same military power
that crushed the life out of the re-
bellion.
The next war will not be begun
by the South. It will come from
the north- The clash of resound-
ing arms that will next be heard
will come from the weapons of
hundreds of thousands of loyal
Northern men who will not permit
the stealing of their birthright.
The laws of the United States shall
not be made by political theives.
The men who hold the seats of the
people's represen atives shall be
duly chosen, Let the Democratic
party look to it that tliey save the
country from a war that will surely
follow their theft of the House of
Representatives.;1! The South had
best take warning. Its outrages

cipal points in Tennessee. Mississ-J upon the negro voter have been
ippi, Alabama, Georgia, South and tolerated too long; but they can-
not, and will not, be permitted to
change the political complexion of
the popular branch of Congress.
Let the Democrats keep their foul
hands off the most sacred institu-
tions of the nation. We have had
enough of them. We have driven
them out of power. They shall
not gain by crime what they have
lost at the ballot box.
If they go on in their theivish
efforts they will soon hear the ap-
proaching inarch of the northern
army that will make war upon the
men who undertake to set aside the
people's verdict by crime. Do tho
Democrats realize what that kind
of war will mean? Do they under-
stand that it will be waged in every
city and hamlet of the land? That
its life-destroying and property-de-
stroying powers-will have had no
equal in the world's history of war?
Does the South want any more

industries with fearful effect? {fit

Connell, ex-Sheriff of Raines coun-

Legislature meets in January. Mr.
McConnell is in every respect a
gentleman, and would reflect honor
on the place, lie was for several
years sheriff of Raines county and
was considered one of the best of-
ficers in the State. He will be re-
