(NFH-PIO)—Soldiers of Reserve
Command North Fort Hood are
receiving the most practical train
ing there is. Nearly all of the cadre
and instructors are well seasoned
Korean and World War veterans.
In fact a recent survey shows
that over 400 members of the
cadre are Korean veterans alone.
These men not only have the
know-how of the training manual
they have also been taught by one
of the best teachers in the world-
experience.
RELIVE OLD TIMES
All combat veterans like to get
together and talk about their war
experiences. To the person who
has never seen actual combat
these boasts sometimes seem ridic
ulous and fantastic.
To some it is accepted as a form
of both advice and entertainment.

SGT. MURRAY J. BERTHELOT of the 9th Training Co. at North Fort Hood lets his men in on
some of the knowledge of tanks he has gained in the course of WW II and the Korean conflict. The
session is strictly informal during a "break" on the T.I.C. course. His instruction comes under the
heading of 'extra benefits' available to men at North Fort from their battle trained cadre. (NFH-PIO)

Combat Experienced Instructors
Teach Men At North Fort Hood
Such is the case at North Hood.
During breaks in training and off
duty hours the usual subject of
discussion is whose outfit took what
hill and how it was done. Since
men of Reserve Command cadre
served in practically every combat
outfit in Korea there are always
different versions of how these
hills and objectives were taken.
USE DIFFERENT METHODS
Sgt. Murray J. Berthelot of the
9th Training Co. a veteran of both
World War II and Korea explains
this by saying "All the outfits are
fighting for the same purpose and
towards the same goal but some
times we have to use different
methods."

Three Civilians
Win Cash Bonus
For Suggestions
Three civilian workers cashed in
$75 worth of ideas with the Army's
suggestion program yesterday.
Newiand W. Blanchard and Samuel
G. Lee both of the Post Engineers
split a $25 award and Wynne A.
Payne of the Post Quartermaster
received $50. The suggestions will
save the Army $1500 a year.
The men were presented the
awards yesterday afternoon by Col.
Robert L. Thompson Jr. director
of personnel.
Lee and Blanchard invented a
gadget that breaks and separates
the glass from the brass part of
burned-out light bulbs so that the
brass can be more easily salvaged.
Payne's award was made for his
suggestion of building a loading
ramp at the cold storage ware
house. The ramp eliminates un
necessary handling of goods stored
at the warehouse and facilitates
loading and unloading operations.

Sgt. Berthelot opened the discus

taking a strategic hill position and
the other sergeants joined in.
The young soldiers say that they
enjoy listening in on these sessions
because they are sometimes bene

They always manage to get their
questions in to be answered too.
The cadre become very serious
when explaining these things be
cause it helps to realize both the
importance and necessity of rough
and rigid training.

Awarded Flag
For Safe Work
The Corps of Engineers' safety
flag for safest military construc
tion in the Ft. Worth District area
was awarded last week to the Fort
Hood Project Office of the Army
Engineers.
According to Col. H. R. Hallock
Ft. Worth District Engineer some
90000 man-hours were worked in
the Hood area by the Corps of
Engineers during the last month
without a single accident.
Construction being conducted by
the Ft. Worth District at Hood in

The District safety flag will be

months at the Corps of Engineers
office for the projects.

corporals and sergeants one ser
geant was "de-striped" to private.
When completed the Hood movie
will picture a day in the life of a
tank crew. However three weeks
of work have gone into the less
than an hour film so that tank
crewmen can see what they have
to do to keep their vehicle in bat
tle condition.
The shooting of a tank battle
was a major problem. Because the
M-47 is not too long off the as
sembly lines no stock shots of
it in combat are available.
Skelton photographed his ama
teur stars firing the tank and add
ed other battle effects by setting
fire to old auto tires to cover the
terrain smoke—the result is a full
scale war.
He expects to complete shooting
shortly if weather conditions re
main good. Occasional cloudness
momentarily stymied the director
but he put it to good advantage.
"That sequence of the film was
to happen in the evening" Skel
ton joked "so the lack of sunshine
won't seem unusual."
A former Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
employee who worked on "Act of
Violence" and "Take Me Out to
the Ball Game" Skelton considers
Army films the harder to direct
"A soldier audience is the most
critical bunch of guys in the
world" he says. "You have to
place fifty times more accuracy
on details in a training film than
in a movie strictly for amuse
ment."
Fort Hood was picked over Fort
Knox Ky. for the film because
of the prodominance of sunshine
during winter months.

Hypodermic Needle
Less 'Shots' In '53
In Arms Of Soldiers
(PIO)—Good news for this year's
Hood soldier is that he faces far
fewer shots from the hypodermic
needle than he absorbed in 1952.
A recent Washington regulation
divides the world into five areas
with the result that a soldier sail
or or airman stationed in the com
paratively disease-free United
States no longer rolls up his sleeves
for innoculations his buddies are
receiving in Africa.
In Area One which includes
North America the new program
amounts to a saving of about nine
needles.
FOUR DISEASES COVERED
A soldier at Hood now receives
routine immunizations for small
pox typhoid tetanus and a Schick
test for diptheria.
A selling point for recruiters is
that the 1953 soldier escapes two
typhus injections four diptheria
jabs one for yellow fever and two
plague shots that the 1952 soldier
didn't miss.
If he is transferred to another
immunization area he gets what
the Army terms a "stimulating
dose" of each routine innoculation.
MORE TIME BETWEEN SHOTS
Even then the regulation reduces
sore arms. It provides for a time
interval between shots while the
soldier is enroute to his new sta
tion.
The sorest arms of all may well
belong to servicemen in Area Four
which includes Africa and South
America. Plus routine shots they
get five additional jabs for cholera
typhus and yellow fever.

Though all men take a diptheria

go only to those serving in Area

According to the Army the regu
lation applys to all service per
sonnel their dependents and civi
lians who come under military
jurisdiction.
