Located on the Fort Hood reser
vation south of Killeen Moonraker
was founded in 1951 by Major
General Bruce C. Clarke former
Fort Hood and 1st AD commander.
The camp derives its odd name
from the Moonraker Country of
England where General Clarke nad
his CC"A" of the 4th Armd. Div.
trained before crossing the English
channel for action in Europe.
Centered around Devizes in Wilt
shire the country's name comes
from an old story. Many years ago
several of the local citizenry were
engaged in bringing home grog
when accosted by excise men. They
cached their bottles in the bottom
of a nearby pond.
One moonlit night a few days
later they were discovered in the
pond with rakes recovering the
bottles. Their excuse to authorities
was that they were raking the
moon beams off the pond.
When General Clarke remodeled
his light tank to serve as a mobile
command post he named it"Moon-
raker." The name stuck as CC'A"
swept across France to the Ger
man border. It then went with
General Clarke to CC'B" of the
7th Armored and the famed St.
Vith campaign in the Battle of the
Bulge.
The tank was never in shop for
repairs although its entire crew
was wounded in action during its
many campaign.
