(CC"B" PIO) Born under
the throes of World War 1 the
73rd AFA came into being as the
73rd Field Artillery Regiment at
Camp Jackson (now Fort Jackson)
S. C. on October 12 1918.
Following a short deactivation
period the 73rd joined the ranks
of the regular Army in 1933 re
maining as an active Battalion
ever since.
With the bombing of Pearl Har
bor the 73rd began girding for the
ultimate mission of all fighting
units—engagement with the enemy.
On July 15 1942 the 73rd was
simultaneously redesignated the
73rd Armored Field Artillery Bat
talion the designation which it
still holds and assigned to the 9th
AD.
As a 105-mm self propelled
artillery battalion the 73rd waded
ashore to the beaches of Normandy
with the 9th Armored in Septem
ber 1944 recording their first com
bat with the enemy in the biting
cold that surrounded Bastogne in

Temporai-ily discarding their ar

fought as infantrymen for weeks
thereby enabling the 101st Airborne
the brief respite needed to properly
dig in and prepare for the last-
ditch onslaught of Bastone by Nazi
General Von Runstedt's Armies.
For these actions the 73rd was
awarded the Presidential Unit Ci
tation.
February 1945 found the battalion
moving across the Roer River and
eventually to Remagen and the
Rhine River. The battalion afford

and substantially assist in one of
the Allies' biggest succeses of WW

Remagen Bridge giving the Allies
the long sought toe-hold into Ger

Movin south and east from Re

Limberg.
After aiding in the close of the
Ruhr pocket in which the back of
the German Army was broken the
battalion was on hand at the en

Allies a line of defense up and

Full Red Air Army Downed
Since Start Of Korea War
SEOUL Korea (AFPS)—Communists forces have lost at least 692
MIG fighters in aerial combat since the beginning of the Korean War
recent USAF figures indicate.
The loss is considered the equivalent of an entire Red air army.
The announced total of American Sabrejets lost during the same
period was only 55. a ratio of
more than 12-to-l in favor of the
U.S. planes-
The crushing United Nations air
record indicated by these new
figures is simply due to superior
planes and men according to Lt.
Gen. Glenn O. Barcus Command
er of the Fifth Air Rorce.
"The Sabrejet is a better plane
than the MIG and Americans are
better pilots than the enemy" said
the 49-year-old general.
Gen. Barcus is a jet pilot him
self with 13 combat missions over
North Korea.
Top combat pilots acknowlelge
their Red opponents to be sharp
aviators however.

Capt. Joseph M. McConnell Jr.
top jet ace said after he had
bagged his 16th MIG that the Red
piiots he has tangled with have
been for the most part "very
sharp with their maneuver."
Also he added the good Com
munist pilots could be spotted by
the way they flew their planes in
formation.
The second ranking jet ace
Capt. Manuel J. Fernandez Jr.
-who has 14 MIG kills to his credit
agreed with McConnell and assert
ed the Reds "have to be taken
seriously—because they have some
good pilots ."
