Ft. Hood has certainly chang-'Army in 1953 was first assigned.''and the fort was officially portent changes in personnel

were only about 6000 men here
then" recalled Bufford. "The
post was involved primarily with
Basic Combat Training and
Advanced Individual Training.
Yet that situation changed in
1961."
In that year according to Buf

Berlin resulted in the discon
tinuing of BCT and AIT at Ft.

He continued his analytical

that Ft. Hood has evolved con

Bufford cited "Operation Big
Lift" (1963) as an example of
the change in Ft. Hood. The
operation involved the movesmall

to Germany.
"It was the first time in
history that an entire division
was transported out of the con

training exercises" he said. "It
showed that within three years
the division had the mobility
effectiveness and readiness to
relocate overseas within 72

Bufford emphasized that the
operation also showed how
greatly the fort had changed
and how well it adjusted to
that change.

Permanence in part seems
describe some of the changes
Bufford has observed at Ft.
Hood.
"Modern masonry buildings
have been built new four lane
highways have replaced roads
landscaping has become ex

facilities have been improved
and expanded" summarized
Bufford. "Two new service clubs
have been constructed an
Enlisted Man's Club was built
three gyms and a bowling alley
have been added all in the
span of a few years."
Bufford summarized the
changes at Ft. Hood and his
observations when he said "The
modernization of facilities and
structures and the increase in
personnel' and the importance
of their mission have changed
Ft. Hood from a significant but
training installation to an
impressive strategic post."
Bufford will leave Ft. Hood
once again when he departs for
the Republic of Vietnam this
month. He expressed a desire
to return by saying "I hope
to return to FT. Hood and the
2nd Armd. Div. when I get
back from Vietnam. After all
sort of grw up with the post
in terms of my military career
and the fort's advancements."
