Two Hood Soldiers Drown
As Boat Capsizes On Lake
Bell County Deputy Sheriff
Wayne Oldham was dispatched
to investigate and called for help
after he spotted life jackets in
the water.
Artificial respiration and oxy
gen were administered for 15
minutes when the first soldier
Williams was pulled from the
water but he could not be re
vived. Fleming was dead when
rescue workers reached him.
Both soldiers were wearing
life jackets.
A game warden said the water
temperature was about 5 0
degrees and there was an 18-
mile per hour wind. (Killeen

and at numerous installations
across the U.S.
In the command center of the
U.S. Readiness Command which
maintains operational command
of all major U.S.-based combat
ready general purpose Army
and Air Force forces a select
planning group is meticulously
completing the final exercise
scenario.
More than 20 bases are
responding with men aircraft
and equipment.
The recently-established U.S.
Readiness Command's mission
requires it to jointly train and
provide a general reserve of
forces that are mobile flexible
and rapid-reacting. The com
mand is organized to deploy
reinforcements to any unified
command when directed by the
Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In this exercise a mythical
overseas command is being
established at Ft. Hood. This
command will be reinforced by
a U.S.-based Armored Division
and Air Force Tactical Airlift
fighter and reconnaissance
units elements that will
subsequently be employed in
mock combat operations.

The last similar large scale

forces from Southeast Asia has
made the resumtiopn of such
large scale maneuvers again
possible.

First Teams Units Use
Old Camp For Training
With all of the training being
conducted by MASSTER and
TRICAP at Ft. Hood land for
training purposes has become
so scarce as to push two units
of the First Team off this fort
and onto another.
Camp Bowie Tex. hardly
resembles a military in
stallation—only the weathered
concrete foundations of old
buildings are left to attest to
the fact that during World War
II it was a large and active
training fort for two entire
divisions.
However the First Team—not
to be daunted by minor in
conveniences such as lack of
barracks—moved into the area
last week for "field training."

Co. A 2nd Bn. 7th Cav. and
Co. B 227th Avn. Bn. were the
units participating in the ex
ercise.
Camp Bowie is located just
outside Brownwood Tex. ap
proximately 100 miles northwest
of Ft. Hood and is situated
in an area of rolling hills and
cliffs. The terrain is well suited
to the rappelling combat assaut
and troop extraction conducted
by the units.
The training exercise lasted
throughout last week and was
made more realistic by
elements of Co. A 75th Rangers
who acted as aggressor forces.
During one night attack by the
rangers the entire camp of the
"friendlies" was overrun by ag
gressors. The result of the raid
was that the friendly com
mander was killed only make-
believe of course.
