Many of us throughout life
have heard time and again how
we should take care of our teeth
but how many of us have ever
heard or stopped to realize why?
As a member of the dental
profession this certainly seems
like not only a valid question
but one of extreme importance
if I were to motivate patients
to properly take care of
themselves. I have spent some
time coming up with an ap
propriate answer and the follow
ing reasons are what I try to
communicate to my patients.
First let me explain that den
tists often say "Take care of
your teeth gingiva (gums) and
their surrounding and sup
porting tissues." In short your
oral cavity (mouth).
Intimate Relationship
The oral cavity has not only
an intimate but a continuous
relationship with all the systems
of your body. We are all
familiar with the fact that the
oral cavity is continuous with
the digestive system that is
food you chew passes directly
down your throat and into your
stomach. Also the same blood
that nourishes your teeth bone
and soft tissues of your mouth
is the same blood that nourishes
your big toe. This is also true
for the nervous system. This
points out that infection or bad
health in the teeth or other parts
of the mouth cannot be
separated from the rest of your
body.
On the contrary there have
been many incidents of
headache fatigue and of
generally feeling bad which have
be at to a
disease.
Importance
Let's talk about the im
portance of teeth themselves.
You are all familiar with the
function of teeth which is to
chew your food. It is most dif
ficult to convince my patients
of the importance of this. Young
patients do not necessarily miss
the ability to properly chew
If You Lose Your Teeth
Your Chin Hits Your Nose
their food because
stomachs are secreting strong
digestive juices which can com
pensate by breaking down food
for the patient. As we get older
however and these digestive
juices begin to weaken then the
patient begins to really miss
his teeth and the work they
could do for his stomach. Let
me say here that dentures (false
teeth) are not the answer as
the best one can hope for is
that they will be 25 per cent
as effective as the natural teeth.
Your teeth are very important
as to how you look and how
you speak. Your teeth and their
supporting bone are the single
supporting structures for ap
proximately a third of your face.
The loss of even one single tooth
will alter although slightly the
profile and appearance of your
face. Of course the more teeth
you lose the more the altera
tion until in the end it is dif
ficult to chew because your chin
gets in the way of your nose.
Surprising Fact
Many patients are surprised
to learn what a large extent the
teeth have to do with speech. Tf

It's easy to believe that when
you buy something on credit all
you are doing is paying a little
extra money for the early use
of the merchandise.
This is true in most cases.
But it is also true that in some
cases the person will pay* an
excessive amount (termed
usury) over the cost of the
merchandise simply for the
iv of us in a
person's money to get the
merchandise he wants sooner
than he could get it if he had
to wait until he could pay cash.
However it is rarely realistic
for an individual or a family
to expect to deal strictly in cash
today. In fact it is sometimes
very sharp personal or family
financial management to use
nother's money temporarily to
get what you want for a reason
important to you.
When used wisely credit can
be a great aid to economic plan
ning and a way to a better
life as well. But misused it
poses great dangers to a
Some of this has resulted from
ignorance of the law. On other
occasions it has represented a
deliberate effort to degrade the
Army. In either ca9e it is a
matter of Army concern.
In Alabama recently in con
trast to the usual disregard of
this matter a discharged Army
veteran was fined for wearing
part of a uniform in violation
of a state law. Federal law
also applies.
The federal law states
he r(you will slowly say the vowels
and consonants of the English
language paying attention to
the contact between your lips
tongue and teeth you will find
that your teeth in particular
will limit the movement of your
tongue so that you can make
distinct sounds. If you will have
doubts try listening to someone
without any teeth or a new set
of dentures (false teeth) as they
try to speak.
I hope that I have answered
your question of "Why should
I keep my teeth?" and that
you will follow the advice of
your dentist as to how you can
keep them. Your teeth were
made to last a lifetime and with
the proper care they will.

Many economists believe that
too much credit is available to
day. Take the average person
with a regular income in

example. How many places can
you purchase items by "charg

How many gasoline bank store

away at you daily over radio
or television or through the
newspaper?
All of these "come-ons" are
aimed at getting more and more
people including you to
use more and more credit. Some
"come-ons" are even aimed
specifically at you the military
Use Of Army6Green'
Illegal—Punishable
In recent years there has been
a marked upsurge in the illegal
wearing of portions of the Army
if or by
servicemen and by others who
have never been in the Army.
"Whoever in any place within
the jurisdiction of the United
States or in the Canal Zone
without authority wears the
uniform or a distinctive part
thereof or anything similar to
a distinctive part of the uniform
of any of the Armed Forces
of the United States Public
Health Service or any auxiliary
of such shall be fined not more
than $250 or imprisoned not
more than six months or both."
Paragraph 1-15G (4) of
reference A requires that
personnel being separated from
the service be oriented on
proper wear of the uniform
by reserve component members
and retired and discharged
persons on appropriate oc
casions."
In addition to instruction now
given as stated in paragraph
4 above specific instruction in
the cited federal law will be
included in all predischarge

Appearance and speech and
the role teeth play in each
brings out the last two although
certainly not the least functions
of your teeth. These are the
functions of contributing or
detracting from the patient's
psychological health. I'm sure
all of you can recall someone
from the past or present who
was ashamed to smile or speak
because of an unsightly dental
situation. Each dentist has tales
of patients who have made great
psychological and personality
adjustments after correction of
such a problem.

man or at a member of your
family.
The credit decision is always
up to the individual or family
considering buying on credit or
borrowing money. You for ex
ample are the only one who
can or has the right to
answer the question: Of the
credit available to me how
much do I need to use or can
I use and still play it safe?
A fact of life in the military
is that a member of the armed
forces is expected to pay his
just debts and pay them on
time. Even though the Services
do not have legal authority to
make a member pay a private
debt or to divert any part of
his pay to settle one penalties
can result from nonpayment.
The Services will refer letters
charging a member with in
debtedness through channels to
the serviceman debtor if a
lender or creditor can prove he
compiled with Federal law
regarding credit transactions
and with the DoD standards of
fairness in credit transactions
Commanders will not however
process debt complaints made
by businessmen who have not
made a genuine effort to collect
re he it a
member whose claims are
patently false or misleading or
whose claims are obviously ex-
horbitant.
So when it comes to credit
an a on in
money or buying on credit there
are some advantages of being
a member of the military com
munity as well as some special
problems sometimes en
countered.
Perhaps the most important
thing of all though is the in
dividual's attitude about credit
and how it should be used
That's what this article is really
all about an individual's at
titude including yours.
Used wisely credit can be a
powerful force in your life help
ing you obtain the things you
want for yourself and your fami
ly including some of the better
tilings you might not be able
to get otherwise. Abused credit
can become the master not
the servant. And when it does
it is a very difficult and deman
ding master indeed. (Ft. Devens
