WASHINGTON It seems
pretty certain that Congress will
vote increases in payments for
those going to school under the
GI bill but the question is: how
much?
The House has passed a bill
that would increase the college
attendance rate from $175 to
$200 a month for a single
veteran $205 to $234 with a wife
and from $230 to $262 for a
wife with one child. Other rates
would go up about the same
14 per cent.
Sen. Vance Hartke D-Ind.
chairman of the Senate Veterans
Affairs Committee has in
troduced a bill that would boost
the rates to $244 for a sngle
veteran $285 with a wife and
$326 with a wife and one child.
Hartke says it would make
the rates to $244 for a single
the liberal benefits given World
War II veterans.
The World War II veterans
received $500 a year for books
fees and tuition and $60 to $90
a month subsistence.

Dear Jerry:
I am in college under the GI
bill and have trouble with one

the Veterans Administration

Legislation for the $1000 has
been introduced by Sen. Charles
Mathias R-Md.
The association which says

GI allowances and many are
having to drop out of school.
BOOST IN WORKS There's
a good chance that the com
pensation paid to veterans for
rvice-connected disabilities
will be increased at least 10
per cent. Such an increase was
introduced by the entire Senate
Veterans Affairs Committee and
hearings are being held.
The committee's bill is con
siderably more generous than
the 6 per cent increase recom
mended by the Veterans Ad
ministration.
The legislation providing the
first raise since July 1 1970
would up the allowance for a
100 per cent disabled veteran
from $450 to $495. It also would

Dear Jerry:
Does the $12500 or 60 per
cent GI home loan guarantee
limit the amount I can pay for
a home?
—JR Little Rock Ark.
Dear JR:
Nobut if you pay more than
the appraised value of the home
the amount above the appraised
value must be paid in cash.
A GI loan may not exceed the
appraised value of the home.

The Army and Navy followed
the lead of the Air Force in

FLIGHT PAY FLAP Many
a in of in
services are unhappy about a
new Defense Department rule
that only those who have the
highest probability" of being
assigned to combat may engage
in proficiency flying. It also
means no such flying by colonels
and above when their jobs don't
call for it.
The move affecting about
7500 rated officers in the four
services is designed to save the
cost of the flying. Although they
won't lose their flight pay many
are fearful that this might be
a step in that direction.

to the nation's solid waste

To emphasize this occasion

Ft. Hood Boy Scouts are holding
their beautification program the
same week. Boy Scouts from
the Leon Valley District will col

May 13 will build litter monsters
in Conder Park in Killeen to
focus attention on the problem
of litter.
"Keep America Beautiful Day
1972" stresses a joint-effort by
people of all ages to bring about
an immediately cleaner en
vironment and litter prevention
in the future. A major objective
is to increase understanding of
recycling. Recycling solves two
problems it gets rid of the
trash that litters and it reduces
the drain on natural resources.
With today's increasing use of
raw materials and with solid

of use and discard must give
way to recyling techniques to
conserve raw materials to pro
tect the environment to con
serve land space and to limit
disposal costs.
Another important objective is

litter and its adverse effects
but millions of other Americans
will become aware. Hopefully
this will lead to less litter in
the future. Huge stacks of litter
accumulated in parking lots and
other high visibility locations
will effectively focus national at

Litter clean up efforts are
conducted at various times
throughout the year by scouts

Studies show that those who see
