Ballad of Bibby & Clyde
By JERRY REED
Clark Geble-Claudette Colbert Jennette McDonald-
Nelson Eddy Katharine Hepburn-Spencer Tracy and
Melvin Purvis-John Dillinger were all famous couples
in the days of the depression.
Most of the above were situated in the northern
part of the country during the days of the WPA and
Rosey's "New Deal". The most famous pair of that
era in the area was Bonnie Parker and Clyde
Barrow.
Unlike their peers this pair of outlaws preferred
robbing a bank to watching the "The March Of
Time" at the local cinema. Bonnie and Clyde sub
scribed to Robin Hood's theory of "take from the rich
and give to the poor" which happened to be them
selves.
In early May of 1934 the couple that had terrorized
the south-western part of the country were finally
stopped in Arcadia Louisiana. Bonnie and Clyde died
in a bullet-riddled car at the hands of the famed
Texas Rangers.
SIMILIAR PAIR
Almost forty years havfe past by since the death of
Bonnie and Clyde and few folks remember the
famous couple. There is another pair of gangsters
who have invaded the Dallas-Fort Worth area they
Jim Bibby and David Clyde.
Even though they are not real criminals Bibby and
Clyde are very harmful to many foes in the
American League as they have robbed players of hits
and runs. It is interesting to note that unlike the
bandits of the early '30s these new personalities are
heroes and ironically they are Texas Rangers.
In six short weeks Bibby and Clyde have won the
hearts of every Ranger fan in the area and maybe
even the whole darn state. The fans no longer have to
hang their heads like Tom Dooley when the subject of
the team is brought up in conversation. Marriage is
said to be more than a word-it's a sentence. Perhaps
the marriage of Bibby and Clyde to the Rangers will
be for a lifetime many fans hope this will come
about.
WELCOME TO DALLAS
David Clyde was no stranger to the Texas people
when he made his debut on June 27 against the Min
nesota Twins. The 18-year-old flash didn't even have
to bring his scrapbook from his Houston Westchester
High School baseball days.
After his brilliant performance against the team
from "The Land Of A Thousand Lakes" Ranger
owner Bob Short equiped big Dave with a
Bankamericacard and the keys to the city along with
a year of free passes to Six Flags and all the ball
point pens he could chew.
Since his first win David has suffered from early
season problems but has overcome these and has
become a bona fide major league pitcher. Clyde has
thrilled everyone from Boston to Oakland and from
the looks of things this could just be the start.
Presently the young southpaw owns a 3-3 record and
prefers to throw against the California Angels a
team which he has earned two victories the latest
being a four-hitter last Tuesday night.
TAKE A LOOK AT ME
Jim Bibby the other half of the terrific twosome
arrived in Dallas around the same time as Clyde but
didn't receive the attention as his youtliful teammate.
While Clyde was arriving at the ball park in his
Cadillac El Dorado Bibby was trying to get his con
nection on the quickest Greyhound to Arlington af
ter all he was just a 28-year-old pitcher in only his
second season in the big leagues.
The St. Louis Cardinals are probably kicking them
selves after sending Bibby to the Rangers while Mr.
Short is all smiles. Often confused with his brother
Henry Bibby has to feel like the stockholders in the
Goodrich Tire Company in explaining I'm the other
guy. Henry is well known as a star eager for the New
York Knicks.
Since his employment with the Rangers Bibby has
been nothing less than great. At press time the man
whose baseball career was threatened by major back
surgery only three years ago has a record of 5 wins
and 4 losses. Bibby's victories include a one-hitter a
two-hitter two four-hitters and his latest feat of a no-
hitter.
Jim's last performance which included 13
strikeouts impressed Short so much that he pulled
out his billfold and gave his star pitcher $5000 that's
not bad for a day's work.
Yes the Dallas-Fort Worth area has certainly
found a talented pair in the Ranger's star hurlers.
Add the names of Bibby and Clyde to the- history
books.

Though starting golf just
