Jackets Wallop Waltrip
Quarterback Monty Parker (14) looks downfield for his receiver as Mark Hammond (6) provides good protection.
(Port Arthur, Sept. 12) The Yellow Jackets rode a
strong defense and a slow starting but responsive of-
fense to defeat Houston's Waltrip High 33-0. The
Jacket defense held Waltrip numerous occasions and
caused the Rams to make many mistakes. Three in-
terceptions and two fumbles stymied key offensive
drives made by Waltrip. The entire Jacket front four,
Danny Elrod, Robert Die, Gary Beevers, Tighe Huber,
plus linebackers Mike Owens, Paul Walker and Bruce
MIKE ANDERSON TOBY ANDRUSWells took away Ram hopes of building momentum.
Perhaps the most outstanding play on defense was an
eighty-five yard pass interception by veteran safety
Bryan Thompson who outsped everyone to the goal.
Offensive leaders were Mike Harpin, Greg Crouch,
Terry Melancon, Monty Parker, Steve Ritchey, Mike
Anderson and Paul Palmer, as the Jacket running and
passing game harassed the Ram defense while chalk-
ing up our first victory.4
