People, let me tell you something. "This putting a year-
book together is not one easy task." When the proposi-
tion that I enter this endeavor came to me, I hesitated to
withdraw from the cozy all-teaching cocoon to which I
was accustomed.
The situation consisted of exhuming the defunct 1972-
73 issue and rescuing the 1973-74 50th anniversary
issue which was destined for a fate not unlike its imme-
diate predecessor. Now let's be honest, yearbooks are
not enjoying a popularity in these years when it is con-
sidered fashionable to be apathetic about everything.
But, here was my chance to blaze a path, to have a new
experience, and to, believe-it-or-not, honestly contrib-
ute in a tangible way to the University.
So I gathered a group of smart, creative, dependable,
designers and workers and we began the search. All of
us were yearbook "rookies" and I'm sure we have
made many blunders and errors of omission. But we
offer you a visual celebration unlike anything you have
ever seen and called a yearbook.
My sincerest kudos to Oscar Fernandez as graphic
designer of The Book, who continuously amazed me
with fresh ideas, and to Jerry Rodgers and Pam Wil-
liams, assistant designers, and all the other "creators"
who put up with my flights of fertile imaginings and
whip-cracking with nary a mutiny.
By now you realize that this editorial is a self-indulgent
rambling, and unless you've ever done a yearbook -
don't criticize. We all hope all of you will be in some
way provoked, pleased, outraged, appeased, amused,
bemused, titillated, stimulated, or in other ways excited
by remembering Lamar's Golden Anniversary through
these pages.
Enjoy,
