VIOLA CHAN - A Beehive of Activity for the Lord
by June Dovt Leong
She is a beehive of
activity...and where
can one more appro-
priately find her...
than at the Bee Hive
Realty...for it is
there that she main-
tains her office.
Realty office and
church keep her so
busily engaged that
she is seldom home.
As one speaks to Viola Chan, one feels the presence of the
Lord, for He is constantly with her.
It was in 1952, when she was a medical secretary at M.D.
Anderson Hospital ... she became associated with the Chi-
nese Baptist Church...a founder and one of its charter
members. The Rev. Travis Key and Dr. Hong Sit became co-
pastors in *53 and Viola started working as church secre-
tary full time...at part-time salary...in 1957 •
"But the Lord has provided for all my needs," said Viola
unoffended and uncomplaining. This summer marks the 25th
Anniversary of the Chinese Baptist Church.
Viola came to Houston well equipped for the ministry, for
in January of '52 she graduated from the Moody Bible insti-
tute in Chicago, well known as the Mother of all Bible
schools," the first in the U.S.A., and founded by the great
evangelist Dwight L. Moody. She took the missionary course
and was a Christian Education graduate with aspirations to
work in the China mission field when the Communist closed
all doors.
Viola was the 4th child in a family of eight children, came
to Houston initially to visit her sister Mrs. Sherman Toy,
and liked Houston so well that it became her permanent home
town.
Since 1952, she has dedicated herself to the life and
growth of the Chinese Baptist Church...serving on the build-
ing committee for two church buildings...the first struc-
ture downtown in *58 and the current Hunter's Creek devel-
opment since '69. The present church located on Brogden is
beautiful, but envisioned is still another addition to the
5 acre site...the activities building.
Viola believes the joy and love for Christ should be shared
with others, especially the young people, for the life and
growth of the church is in the future. Thus she devotes
considerable time each Wednesday in Bible Fellowship and
Study with a predominantly college and career age group.
Until two years ago, she was youth council advisor. Her
work now embraces all ages...weddings...naturalization...
legal matters...problems many and varied.
Due to her honesty and integrity, and because she knows
Christ, she has been called to execute wills, and has felt
honored to have been entrusted with this task. She attrib-
utes these experiences to her own growth and spiritual
learning. Reading has helped her to become alive and help-
ful to others, for the Bible has been her spiritual food
as she hears God's voice through His words.
Viola is also involved in the personnel committee now in
the selection of an assistant pastor. They have searched
for him at the Dallas Theological School.0.at the Baptist
Seminary...and in California. Someone able to counsel and
one well versed in the English language is sounght.
