COMMUNITY NEWS
The Chinese Professional Club's
Open House/Las Vegas Night, held
October 29 at Strake Jesuit School,
attracted over 100 happy gamblers.
An auction of prizes, donated by local
individuals and businesses, took
place at the end of the evening to help
raise funds for the CPC Scholarship
Fund. Generous high-bidders
included: Eleanor Der Bing, for the
Las Vegas trip; James C. Chang, for
the television; and Tan-Hua Wu, for
the AM/FM digital radio.

Dr. Marvin Raley, wife Judy and
children Angela and Nathan are
residing in Livingston after
ministering in the Children's Hospital
in Cambodia under the sponsorship
of World Vision. He was the special
speaker at a retreat on November 25-
26 at the Baptist Encampment in
Trinity Pines, sponsored by the
Single Adults of the Chinese Baptist
Church.
Houston Independent School
District administrator Martha Wong
has recently been awarded her
doctorate degree in education.

Mr. and Mrs. William Der Bing, Sr.
of Houston are the proud
grandparents of a new grandson,
Benjamin Logan Lawson, born on
November 5, 2:50 p.m. at Arlington
Hospital, Arlington, Virginia. Parents
of Benjamin, weighing 8 pounds, 13
ounces and 21 inches long, are Dale
and Debbie Der Bing Lawson.

On November 20 at the Chinese
Baptist Church, Evelyn J. Chang and
Alan J. Shem were united in
marriage. The bride's parents are Dr.
and Mrs. Sol Chang; the groom's
parents are Mr. and Mrs. June Shem.
The wedding reception followed at
the Westin Oaks—Galleria.

Mark Lee, son of Donald and Lai
Jean Lee, recently passed the Texas
State Bar. An accounting graduate
from the University of Texas in
Austin, Mark graduated from the
University of Houston Law School in
May, 1983
Dr. Earl Tan, formerly of Bellville,
has started medical practice in
Missouri City.

Allergist Joseph T. Queng's
celebrity patient, actress Helen
Hayes, routinely comes to Houston
for allergy check-ups at the
McGovern Allergy Clinic. Now,
reports Dr. Queng, the star of stage,
screen, radio and TV has authored a
new book, titled Helen Hayes: A
Gathering of Hope (published by
Fortress Press), available at the
Baptist Book Store. This wonderful
Christian lady shares with the reader
her favorite poems, psalms, prayers
and lyrics.
Pediatrician Robert Mao recently
departed his Katy and Memorial
addresses to open his new office in
the Fort Bend Physician's Plaza in
Missouri City.
Mrs. Mayling Gee Hew (daughter
of Mrs. Harry Gee, Sr.) and Jeanette
Yip Hew of New Orleans came to
Houston in November to attend the
World Championship Tennis Mixed
Doubles, and visited local relatives
and friends.
Joe Eng and partner Hem recently
opened Hem—H Auto Sales at 2115
Louisiana Some of its car loans were
financed by Houston's Asian
American National Bank.
Newlyweds Lorraine and George
Liu recently moved into their new
home in the Briar Wood Addition.

Ophthalmologist Rosa Tang of the
Hermann Eye Center recently
became the mother of her third child,
a girl.
Neuroradiologist K. Francis Lee of
the University of Texas Health
Science Center departed Houston for
South Korea on a two-week tour to
lecture at nine medical schools.
Out of thousands of photographic
entries, Alvin Gee, Certified Profes-
sional Photographer, won "Best of
Show" in the Black and White div-
ision and numerous Honorable Men-
tions at the 1983 Houston Post Photo
Show, held November 5-6 at the
Astrohall.
Under beautiful fall weather, the
Chinese American Citizens Alliance
conducted its Fourth Annual Tennis
Tournament. Due to limitations
posed by remodeling at the Memorial
Park Tennis Center, many would-be
players were turned away; still, over
100 applicants played in five
categories.
The tournament's champion was
Chin Yueh Chang, a graduate
student at the University of Houston.
Chang won the Advanced Men's
Championship over David Tai in
straight sets. Earlier in the afternoon,
Chang teamed with L. F. Fan to win
the Advanced Men's Doubles
Championship over the team of
Jimmy Tran and Tai Pham. Chang,
from Taiwan, previously served as
assistant tennis coach at Lamar
University in Beaumont.
Repeating as champions were
Pigool "Peggy" Kulcharnpises in
women's singles over Teresa Ngao
and the mixed doubles team of
Norman Wong and Nancy Flick over
Ms. Kulcharnpises and Walt Rosen.
Winning the Intermediate Doubles
Championship were Tuon-Tin Lee
and Sin-Wei Chu in a close match
over Thomas Lee and David Lam.
Finally, Albert Chu won the
Intermediate Singles Championship
over Tuon-Tin Lee.

Men's Doubles Champions
On October 30, Dr. Daniel Cheung
served as special speaker at the
deacons' ordination service of the
Chinese Baptist Church. Ordained
as deacons were August Lau and
Wayne Gor.
Chin Yueh Chang & L.F. Fan,
Men's Advanced Doubles
Dr. Murphy Lum of the First
Chinese Baptist Church of Los
Angeles was the guest speaker on
October 25-30 for the First Chinese
Baptist Church of San Antonio.
Afterward, he came to Houston to
visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom
Lum, and had dinner with Mr. and
Mrs. Tommy Ligh. The Lighs invited
Thelma Key, wife of the late Rev
Travis Key The Keys were close
friends of Murphy Lum, one of the
first members of Chinese Baptist
Church during its early years in
downtown Houston.

Recently Viola Chan had the
opportunity to visit family and friends-
in Tulsa, Los Angeles and Chicago.
