Mr. Moroney joined The News as a reporter, served
as an advertising salesman and worked in the promotion
and circulation departments before becoming assistant
to the business manager in 1950. He also spent a year at
the radio and television stations.
He progressed to assistant treasurer of the corpora-
tion and was elected to the board of directors in 1952. In
1955, he was named treasurer, elevated to vice president
and treasurer in 1960 and became executive vice presi-
dent in 1970. In 1973, Mr. Moroney was named president
and chief executive officer of Belo Broadcasting Cor-
poration and in 1974 became chairman of the board of
that corporation.
In 1980, he was elected to president and chief exec-
utive officer of The Dallas Morning News and president
and chief operating officer of A. H. Belo Corporation.
He was promoted to the position of president and
chief executive officer of A. H. Belo Corporation Janu-
ary 1983. In April 1984, he was elected to the additional
position of chairman of the board. In January 1985 he re-
linquished the title of president.
Mr. Moroney retired as an active operating officer
of A. H. Belo on Dec. 31, 1986. He currently is a consultant
to the corporation and holds the title of chairman of the
executive committee.
Joe M. Dealey
Joe M. Dealey, past chairman of the board of the
A. H. Belo Corporation, is the son of the late E. M. (Ted)
Dealey and the late Clara MacDonald Dealey. A native
of Dallas, he graduated from Highland Park High School
and, in 1941, from the University of Texas at Austin. By
attending the Southwest School of Printing, he learned to
operate mechanical equipment in the printing industry.
He also worked in the mailing room and photographic
laboratory of The Dallas Morning News. His permanent
employment began Jan. 4, 1942, as a reporter.
In May 1942, Mr. Dealey joined the U. S. Air Force,
serving two years as an aircraft mechanic. After attend-
ing Officers Training School, he was graduated in 1944 as
a second lieutenant. He served as aircraft maintenance
officer in the United States and in Berlin until his dis-
charge from service in 1946.Returning to his previous job as a reporter on The
News, Mr. Dealey later served as assistant business
news editor and assistant to the managing editor. He
joined the executive department as assistant secretary
in 1950 and was elected to the board of directors in
1952. From 1955 until 1960, he was secretary of the cor-
poration and then president until 1980 when he was
named chairman and chief executive officer, following
an internal reorganization of the company. On Dec. 31,
1982, he became chairman of the board and held that ti-
tle until April 1984.
John W. Bassett Jr.
John W. Bassett Jr. is a native of Roswell, N.M.,
where he practices law. After graduating from Roswell
High School, he attended Stanford University, where he
majored in economics and received a bachelor's degree
in 1960.
Following graduation, he was commissioned as a
second lieutenant in the Army and entered active duty at
Fort Benning, Ga. He served in the Second Infantry Divi-
sion there and in the Army Reserves, where he was
advanced to first lieutenant.
Mr. Bassett attended the University of Texas School
of Law and became an associate editor of The Texas
Law Review. Upon graduating with honors in June 1964,
he was awarded a bachelor of law degree and became a
member of the Order of the Coif, a legal honorary orga-
nization.
After passing the Texas and New Mexico Bar exami-
nations in 1964, he practiced law in Roswell.
In 1966, Mr. Bassett was selected as a White House
Fellow and for a year served as a special assistant to the
attorney general of the United States.
In October 1967, Mr. Bassett returned to private
practice with the law firm of Atwood, Malone, Mann and
Turner, P.A., in Roswell.
Mr. Bassett was elected to the board of directors of
A. H. Belo Corporation in 1979. He also serves as a mem-
ber of the Board of Education for the State of New Mexi-
co, is a Rotarian and is a member of several boards of
directors of local charitable institutions in Roswell.
