On the arrival at the fair grounds
the queou wna escorted to the royal

Governor Hubbard and other candi-

hotel accommodations are inadequate
but the private citizens are liberal lu

order this morning ut halfspast ten by
ty tiie stute chairman Dewecs; All
the counties in the ctute with the ex
ception of ubout five had a full dele-
gation present lioth of the Philadel
phia delegations are present In full.
Both of them murched In a body
wearing badges iu order to be pre-
pared for any disturbance that may
occur. There is a large reserve lorce
of policemen stationed at the door at
Concert hull where the convention is
iu seseion. It is reHtituuted that the
number of delegates present is about
two hundred and thirty.
Chairman Dewees lu his address to
the convention reviewed .tho condi-
tion of tho party btatiug that
from five thousand votes In
187o it lias increased nearly fifty-
live thousand votes in 1877 and
that with Its thorough organization
there was no reason that Its entire suc-
cess should not be achieved by the
party at the next campaign. There is
present In the convention a delega-
tion of ladles representing the Citizens'
Suffrage Association who will en-
deavor to have a woruaos' rights plank
Inserted in the platform.
David Kirk was elected temporary
chairman. Kirk Is the recognized
Armstrong candidate. Mayor l'ow-
derly recoguized Wright the candidate
who received only eighty-four votes.
Mr. Klrd addressed the convention
and trusted that its Rction would be
that of good order. He denounced
tbe national banking system and
claimed that the nation should honor
its own paper. He was loudly ap-
plat'ded throught hia remarks.

purchase of arms. Colonel Mulligan
left for Oswego last night He propo
ses to visit every large city to ascertain
how many men cau be relied ou and
how many ltemlngtou rifles are
needed.

bail to keep the peace.

About three o'clock yesterday eve-
ning the report of a gun rung out ou
the sultry air startling the dwellers
on Elm street near tho corner of Poy-
(Iras Tho streetB were Immediately
filled with a crowd who were euger to
learn the cause. A little boy came
running across the street crying that
a man over the way had shot some
body aud before he oould be further
questioned disappeared arouud the
corner running down Poydras street.
The crowd was thrown Into a state of
excitement by this report and rushed
across the street in a body when it
was learned that the report of tbe gun
had come from the gunsmith shop of
C. 11. Urlfleu. The shop was soou tilled
to Its utmost capacity while there
were quite a number who fulled to
effect au entrance. A man about thirty-five
years of age sat in a chair look-
ing pule aud haggard as he clutched a
gun in his hands. Mr. Griffon came
forward aud statod to the crowd that
there was no one hurt and pointing
to the man sitting iu the chair said:
'It was only my clerk testing a gun."
And so it was. The crowd was com-
pletely sold and times are too dull to
lose what might have been a first-
class Item.
Another Proposition to Furnish
Water.
The proposition of tb6 Dallas Irriga
tion and Water Works company as
presented to the council at its Tuesday
night's session to supply the city with
water comes from Captain Kldd. He
baa a spring in Freuclitown four
miles west of the city that he claims
is inexhaustible which is several hun
dred feet higher than this point. He
proposes to lay piping from that point
to tbe city should (hat proposition be
accepted. The council as a majority
do not eutertain the idea as a feasible
one.

room. The room was filled with
