W. A. Townsend of Mabank,
who suffered a fractured pelvis
in a head-on automobile colli-
sion last week near the Sweet-
water Country club, Is recover-
ing gradually. He is receiving
treatment in the Sweetwater
hospital.
lioyce M. Irvin of College Sta-
tion underwent major surgery
Monday; Mrs. E. M. Chancellor,
205 Orange street, underwent an
operation Monday; B. H. Rogers
was admitted for medical atten-
tion; Mrs. R. H. Fitzgerald was
moved to the home of her sis-
ter, Mrs Arthur Johnson, after
recovering from surgey.
Mrs. R. O. Pearson, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Davis,
is improving from surgery; Mar-
shall Sewell was dismissed Mon-
day after three months in the
hospital. He suffered a broken
leg and other injuries in April
when a truck which he was
driving for Tidwell shows, turn-
ed over on a highway west of
town, pinning the youth be-
neath.
Mr. and Mrs. Cook
Back From Trip
Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Cook have
returned from an extended vaca-
tion trip to Georgia and Louis-
iana. They visited Mr. Cook's old
home at Birmingham and in-
cluded Atlanta and other points
on their itinerary. Most of their
two-weeks' vacation period was
spent in the mountains of north-
ern Georgia. They report crop
conditions to be exceptionally
good throughout the states visit-
ed. Mr. Cook is manager of the
Montgomery Ward & Co. store.
Second Half Tax
Payments Are Due
Second half of the city taxes
are due and payable now, ad-
vises W. H. W'haley, Sweetwater
tax collector.
Deadline for payments is July
:>1 and all such taxes not paid
by that date become delinquent.
The division payment is for
those citizens who split their
municipal taxes on last January.
Taxes not paid or settled by
split-payment arrangement last
January are delinquent.
Kendrick Returns
To South America
Marion Kendrick, son of Mr.
and Mrs. A. S. Kendrick who has
been in Sweetwater three
months on a vacation, left Sat-
urday for Dallas, from where he
is to fly to New York to sail July
15, for South America.
Mr. Kendrick, district superin-
tendent of the Lago Petroleum
Corp., a subsidiary of the Stand-
ard Oil company of New Jersey,
is beginning his thirteenth year
in the Lake Maracaibo Venezu-
elan oil area.
During his extended residence
in South America, Mr. Kendrick
has received regular promotions,
advancing him to his present
responsible position.

Mrs. Abe Levy Is
In New York City
Mrs. Abe Levy is in Nev^ york
to attend the fashion mart and
revues of fall and winter fash-
ions. She will be away for six
weeks, purchasing ladies' ready-
to-wear, and accessories for
Levy Bros.
Jefferson Suffers
$200,000 Fire Loss
JEFFERSON — (UP) — Fire
Chief Milt Mott estimated at
$100,000 today the damage of a
fire that destroyed two-thirds
of a block of the main business
section of Jefferson Sunday.
The blaze, of undetermined
origin, destroyed a cafe, furni-
ture store, clothing store and
| three law offices. Three volun-
| teer firemen suffered minor in-
juries before the fire was
brought under control.

Melvin School
Nears Completion
BRADY—Construction is rap-
I idly going forward on the new
I Melvin school building with
plastering already completed.
The structure is expected to be
completed before opening of the
fall term. A PWA grant of $11,-
045 was received for construc-
tion of a gymnasium, in addi-
tion to the new school build-
ing.

The plot concerns the efforts
of an ultra-modern married cou-
■ple. played by Melvyn Douglas
and Florence Rice, to break up
the activities of an internation-
al stolen rare book gang. They
combine married love and a
business career by tracking
down the suspects to a murdqii,
When the couple are captured
by racketeers it is their ability
to joke and laugh with their
captors that finally enables them
to escape and reach the police.
This laugh and thrill a min-
ute picture also features such
entertaining performers as
Claire Dodd, Shepperd Strud
wick, Louis Calhern, Nat Pen-
dleton and Douglas Dumbrille.

Former Resident
Of Divide Dies
Word has been received by
Lon Rotan of Sweetwater of the
death Sunday of his father, W.
L. Rotan, former resident of
Divide, who lived in California.
Services probably will be held
in California where' the family
now lives.
Dee Rotan of Divide is a sur-
viving son and other children
live in Midland and California
points.
Mr. Rotan was a former No-
lan county road commissioner,
having served as commissioner
for four years.

Mrs. Garner Ends
Tropical Cruise
NEW ORLEANS — (UP) —
Mrs. John Nance Garner, wife
of the vice - president, re-
turned yesterday from a 16-day
tropical cruise "feeling ten years
younger."
She said, however, that she
was anxious to get back to her
home in Uvalde. Tex., where the
vice president is at present.
Mrs. Garner and a party of five
visited Havana, Cristobal and
Costa Rica. They left last night
by train for Houston.
"It was the first cruise
through the Caribbean I've
taken in years, but I want to
take it again when I can get
away from my duties as secre-
tary. -valet and general rousta-
bout to my husband," Mrs. Gar-
ner said.

| commissioner in 1924.
