SINCE 1881
"Pioneer Lumbermen" of
Sweetwater and Texas becomes a
significant expression in con-
nection with the name "Burton-
Lingo" in the years since 18S1
when this great building mate-
rials organization got its start
from humble beginnings, from
the mind and effort of Willard
Burton, dean of the states lum-
bermen today.
He is 93, still actively direct-
in his organization of 32 yards,
as president of Burton-Lingo Co.
Mr. Burton was 93 last Decemb-
er.
Organization of this large Tex-
as company followed building
of the Texas Pacific railroad into
Abilene and other Texas cities.

Martinez Learned To Cook Early
Cactus Qrill Popular Eating Place
The popular Cactus Grill
Cafe has an outstanding record
for real Mexican foods that
have the preparation and tas-
tiness of similar foods in old
Mexico, his cafe, which is loca-
ted at ill Oak Street, also has
an excellent record for expert-
ly prepared American dishes as
well.
When one studies the long ex-
perience and unusual qualifica-
tions of Manuel Martinez, own-
er and operator, it is not sur-
prising that the establishment
enjoys such a fine reputation.
Martinez was 21 years of age
when he came to this country
from Mexico in 1912. He imme-
diately became a naturalized
American citizen and has, since
that time, lived in Texas. He
operated a cafe iri McCamey,
Texas, cooked for many years
in a large San Angelo Cafe and
finally opened the Cactus Grill
in Sweetwater in July 1942. Hav-
ing been born in Mexico, he
learned as a mere child, how to
season, cook and serve every
conceivable kind (.1 Mexican
food. 'Ihis experience, combin-
ed with his many ye in? of cook-
ing and caft operation in Tex-
as, gives him a training in both
American and Mexican culinary
accomp.ishment that is rarely
possessed by one individual.
"Many persons either in the
army or connected with mili-
tary activities from the north-
ern parts of the United States,
who have never eaten any Mex-
ican dishes before, visit the Cac-
tus Grill for these foods," stat-
ed Martinez, "while others who
have made frequent trips to
Mexico also come here for the
same purpose—and we are iiap-
j py to state that both classes
of our customers almost in-
variably compliment our cojk-
ing. We also specia'ize in fine
steaks and are developing quite
a nice clientele for these as
| well."
The reputation of the Cactus
Grill has extended to many
parts of West Texas, with
friends "dropping in' for meals
"like v.e had before" from a
number of cities.
Both civilian and soldier cus-
tomers, men and women, and
those of either that like choice
Mexican dishes or American
| cooking are regular customers
I when they can manage t>j reach
