SCOUT MASTERS' SCHOOLS.
Splendid Opportunities Are Offered Young Men Desiring to Become Scout Masters, to Acquire the
Principles and the Aims of Scouting.
SEVEN schools for
Scout Masters
will be maintained
this summer. They
will have as instruc-
tors men who are
thoroughly skilled
teachers and who are
imbued with the spirit
of Scoutcraft and the
principles of the
movement as outlined
by the leaders of the
Boy Scouts of Amer-
ica. Five of the
schools will be
managed in connec-
tion with s u m m e r
courses in univer-
sities. Courses will
be given in the
University of Wis-
consin, Cornell Uni-
versity, University
of Virginia and
Texas University,
while the Boston
Scout Council will
have a summer Scout Masters' School.
That so many universities should make
it a point to give instruction in Scout-
craft indicates two things: First, it
shows that educators the country over
appreciate the value of the Scout princi-
ples and are ready to do everything to
spread them and help young men learn
the art of handling boys. Secondly, it
shows that there is a deep interest among
men and boys in Scouting and that the
heads of universities feel they must cater
to the young men desirous of getting sci-
entific instruction in the principles of
Scouting.
University of Wisconsin
The University of Wisconsin in its
summer session from June 21 to
August 1, under the Department of Phy-
sical Education and Play, offers two
courses for Scout /Masters. One dis-
cusses Scoutcraft and the Camp Fire
Girls, outlining the object and_ history of
the movements, and the activities which
they cover. The other treats the subject
of first aid and|gives a first aid diploma
from the American Red Cross. Each
course has three illustrated lectures a
week and includes practical field work.
The fee of $15 includes enrollment in
any of the ordinary summer courses.
A GROUP OF SCOUT MASTERS IN SCHOOL AT SILVER BAY.
While these courses apply specially to
Scoutcraft, they can be taken in con-
nection with other work that counts for
Cornell University
At Cornell University, Ithaca, N. Y., is
held a school for leadership in country
life which purposes to train all classes of
rural leaders. There is no registration
fee, but students pay their own expenses.
Courses particularly for Scout Masters
are as follows: the psychology of leader-
ship, the study of human nature, the
pedagogy of leadership, group organiza-
tion, the development of rural character,
social agencies and play. The lectures
will all include field work where it is
practicable, and the courses range from
three to seven periods a week. Regis-
tration takes place Monday, June 23, and
the session closes July 4. AH persons
interested are requested to notify
Secretary A. R. Mann at the College
of Agriculture well in advance.
University of Virginia
Announcement has already been made
concerning the University of Virginia
courses in the Department of Education.
Besides those bearing particularly upon
the Scout movement, courses of study in
school management,
recreation and play-
grounds, evening re-
creation, and prob-
lems of organization
and demonstration
should interest all
Scout Masters. A tui-
tion fee of $5 is
charged for the
special two-week
course for Scout Mas-
ters. This includes
attendance at lectures
in psychology and
pedagogy and- in all
the other courses
which might be profit-
able. Each Scout Mas-
ter should be provided
with a copy of the
revised manual and
a pair of good field
glasses for the course
in bird study. The
summer school begins
July 7, and Scout
Masters enrolled in
this special course will be given all the
privileges of regular student.
The University of Texas under the
administration of the Department of
Education offers a Scout Master's train-
course which includes instruction in all
forms of Scoutcraft and work with the
boys. This course continues through the
year and counts on the University work
of the student toward a degree.
University of California.
The summer session of the University
of California offers courses which will
be especially valuable to Scout Masters
and Boy Workers. The subjects taken
up are first aid, practical conduct of
play and athletics, social and recreation
centers, nature and function of play,
applied psychology, physical geography
and special courses in agriculture and
manual training. The course lasts from
June 10 to August 1.
The Alleghany County Council, with
Headquarters at Pittsburg, will conduct
a camping training course for Scout
Masters, under the direction of Mr.
Charles B. HortOn, who last year was
Director of Training Schools and Camps
for National Headquarters. Instruction
