The Cowboy
SCOUTING, MARCH 25, 1920
Two Knot
Lessons
By Charles F. Smith
Teachers College,
Columbia
HP HE Cowboy method of the bow-
line is useful when tying
around an object over head such as
a horse's neck. Make an overhand
loop with the right and hold it with
the left hand as shown.
Reach down through the loop and
pull the standing part "S" up form-
ing a slip knot. Then release the
right hand and grasp the free end
"F."
Pass "F" through the loop formed
last and pull up as tightly as de-
sired.
Turn the end "F" back upon it-
self, hold with the right and pull
quickly with the left.
Compare this bowline with one
tied by the Sailor method and no-
tice that the free end lies on the
outside of the loop in the Cowboy
and inside in the Sailor. The Cow-
boy is sometimes called an outside
bowline.
T T NWIND one strand and lay a
^ piece of twine under it. Re-
place the strand in the rope and lay
the free end as in "B." Wind "E"
tightly about both the rope and
twine, five or six turns.
After winding about as shown,
pull up the end "B" and be sure
that all the turns lay close together.
Now place the end "E" upon the
rope and continue winding around
it and the end of the twine.
After whipping for y2 to 1 inch
depending upon the size of the rope,
pull up the end "E."
To complete the whipping cut the
ends of the twine as closely as pos-
sible and pull out the end of the
rope to make it as large as possible.
