College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)
Agriculture and Environment 39
Departmental requirements for the BS in animal science are
as follows:
1. Agriculture and environment, 18 hours: ANSC 232, 336, 351,
or 421, 363, 483, 496.
2. Selections, 3 hours: AENV, AGRB, AGRO, ANSC, RANS or
management sciences.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, students majoring in animal
science must take 12 hours of electives, including deficiency
requirements in science and foreign language, arranged to ensure
33 advanced hours.
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE (BS)
Major Code: ENVR
The purpose of this degree is to fulfill the educational needs of
students who are preparing for careers in field-oriented environmental
disciplines. As the national consciousness of the finite nature of natural
resources has increased, the extraction industries, agriculture and
manufacturers in general have been required to change the way they
handle natural resources. Interactions between companies that consume
natural resources and regulations governing the conservation of these
resources have led to the creation of new disciplines and new career
opportunities. Graduate schools in colleges of agriculture as well as in
colleges of arts and sciences offer degrees and graduate assistantships
in a multitude of environmental areas. The emergence of new jobs in
field-oriented environmental disciplines indicate the opportunities for
graduates in environmental science.
The degree plan in environmental science requires many of the same
freshman and sophomore biology courses in Category I of the biology
degree. Advanced biology courses include ecology and biostatistics.
The degree plan includes the same laboratory chemistry courses that
are required of majors in animal science and agronomy and range
science at ACU and in other universities in Texas. The degree requires
courses in soil edaphology, nutrient requirements of animals, native and
introduced plant species, and the fate of agricultural chemicals in the
environment. Laboratory chemistry courses are prerequisites to three
of these courses.
Departmental requirements for the BS in environmental science
are as follows:
1. Agriculture, 13 hours: AENV 490, AGRO 233, ANSC 252 or 336,
RANS 353.
2. Environment, 14 hours: AENV 130/131, 495; AGRO 479;
RANS 354 or 498.
3. Biology, 7 hours: BIOL 362/364, 483.
4. Science selections, 7 hours.
5. COMS 430.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, students majoring in
environmental science must take at least 11 hours of electives,
including deficiency requirements in foreign language, arranged to
ensure 33 advanced hours.
RANGE AND AG~OMY (BS)
Major Code: AGRA
ACU's location in natural range country makes range science a major
area of agricultural instruction. In addition to range land owned by
the university, students have access to other ranches of the area for
observation and individual and group projects.
Agronomy is the theory and practice of crop production and soil
management. Both crop science and soil science require a good
background in the basic sciences. Agronomy and range science majors
usually elect additional courses in biology and chemistry. Students
trained in range and agronomy have many job opportunities in
research, industry, education, agricultural civil services, and operating or
managing farms or ranches.
Departmental requirements for the BS in range and agronomy
are as follows:
1. Agriculture and environment, 17-18 hours: AENV 495;
RANS 354; AGRO 450, 479; AGRO 493 or RANS 498.2. Selection, 3 hours: AENV, AGRB, AGRO, ANSC, RANS or
management sciences.
General Electives
To obtain a total of 128 credit hours, students majoring in range and
agronomy must take 12-13 hours of electives, including deficiency
requirements in science and foreign language, arranged to ensure
33 advanced hours.
AGRICULTURE EDUCATION
If the student plans to teach vocational agriculture in high school, the
student may take from two to four years of the student's work at ACU
and complete the requirements for a Smith-Hughes Certificate at one of
the state universities. Special arrangements have been made with
several universities so that the student may complete the BS degree in
animal science or range/agronomy at ACU and receive the Smith-Hughes
Certificate in conjunction with master's degree work at those
universities. See the department chair for further information.
PRE-VETERINARY MEDICINE
ACU offers the background courses needed prior to entering a school
of veterinary medicine. While at ACU, a student may choose to follow
the plan recommended by Texas A&M University. Others choose to
complete the BS at ACU before entering veterinary school. An
appropriate major in this case is animal science. See the department
chair or animal science advisor for further information.
COOPERATIVE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE
DEGREE (BS)
ACU awards the bachelor's degree to qualified students who have
satisfactorily completed three years of prescribed work at ACU (a
minimum of 104 hours) plus one year at a recognized school of
veterinary medicine. Pre-veterinary students in the cooperative
program are advised by a professor in animal sciences.
Admission Requirements
Before being admitted to a program, a student must satisfy the
requirements listed in the SATIACT Placement section of this catalog.
General Education Requirements
General education requirements (University and Degree Core
requirements) for the BS are listed in the General Education
Requirements section of this catalog.
A cooperative BS degree requires the following:
* Bible, 12 hours.
* ENGL 326.
Departmental requirements for the cooperative BS in animal
science are:
1. Biology, 15 hours: BIOL 112/114, 113/115, 351, 355/357.
2. Chemistry, 19 hours: CHEM 131/133, 132/134, 221/223,
322/324, 453.
3. Physics, 8 hours: PHYS 110/111, 112/113.
4. Mathematics, 3-4 hours: MATH 131 or 183/185. Note: Calculus is
required for students in pre-veterinary medicine.
5. Animal science, ANSC 111, 252 or 336.
General Electives
General electives, including deficiency requirements in science and
foreign language, may complete the 104 credit hours total at ACU.
Pre-veterinary students should take courses in animal science and
nutrition and 6 hours of political science.
Course Descriptions
Please see the Course Descriptions section of this catalog. Courses
offered by the Department of Agriculture and Environment include
those with the following designations: AENV, AGRB, AGRO,
ANSC, RANS.
