Introduction
The Department of Sociology and Family Studies builds upon the
university goals of strengthening Christian character and education
for service while addressing contemporary social issues and providing
a foundation for future personal and professional growth. Within this
focus, students may choose family studies, criminal justice, or sociology
as a major concentration while interacting with students in the other
areas of concentration.
The department is committed to attaining high standards in education
while offering personal guidance to students regarding their life
choices. Every faculty member holds or is actively pursuing a terminal
degree in an academic or professional field. Sociology and Family
Studies faculty have academic degrees and professional experience in
such areas as community services, marriage and family life, religion,
gerontology, research, administration, crime and delinquency,
interpersonal group skills, group leadership, business and professional
ethics, consultant services to business organizations, and professional
and personal growth, family violence, and health care services.
Study Abroad Expectations
All students are encouraged to participate in ACU's Study Abroad
program. Classes offered at Study Abroad sites vary depending on
the site. Academic advisors can assist students in planning ahead for
their Study Abroad experience and should be consulted during the
freshman year.
Family Studies
The focus of family studies is an integrative approach to the
relationships among families and communities and the environments
in which they function. Courses are designed to provide the
knowledge and skills needed for strong Christian homes, employment
in family service careers, and graduate study.
Family service professionals work with and for people in education,
business, government, human services and research. They work in
such diverse settings as child care facilities, aging facilities, schools,
colleges and universities, stores and studios; governmental agencies;
research laboratories; and homes.
