"I'm afraid you can't be a nurse anymore Miss
Crowne, but we'll let you know what's to be done with you
as soon as we hear back from Two Rivers.
"I need to make rounds!"
Dr. Cranston shook her head and exited, leaving
Regina alone again with only the door. She pretended not
to hear it. Eventually she began to posit that if she could
not hear it, did it even exist, and if not, couldn't she just
walk out? She approached the door, but found it still solid.
It barked loudly. She fell to the floor, scurried back to her
corner, and cried.
Regina imagined herself back in the recovery ward
where she was supposed to have remained. She went from
room to room administering doses of morphine to soothe
the aches and pains of all the patients.
She then remembered Ms. Mathews, with the broken
hip, and how she had promised to meet her grand children.
She didn't want to let the old woman down. Coupled with
the thought of returning to Two Rivers, Regina panicked.
She paced around the room pounding a fist against the wall,
as though searching for a weak point that would collapse
beneath the force of her striking and reveal an escape route.
"Like the walls would let you out," the door said. "I
make the decisions."
Regina punched the door. She rammed it with her
shoulder. She kicked it like the men on cop TV shows.
She alternated punches, shoulder thrusts and kicks for a
good five minutes. Finally, she gave herself as much of a
running start as she could in such a small room, and hit the
door with her right shoulder. She bounced back and fell to
the ground. A dull throbbing permeated her arm. She tried
to lift it, but couldn't get it higher than a few inches off the
ground.
"You're so stupid," the door said.
