"Time for presents," David's mom said.
The party was almost over. Josh looked at the door.
David opened his gifts and everyone clapped and
cheered. Not one of the gifts was a dud. He got some
movies, some video games, a football, and a lot of other
cool toys. Josh hoped that no one noticed that there
wasn't a gift from him in the pile. He didn't want to try
to explain why he hadn't brought a gift to his own best
friend's birthday party.
After gifts parents started coming to pick up their
kids. Soon Josh and David were the only two left. A man
came in and started throwing everything off the table into
a trashcan. David's mom finished putting David's gifts in
a large bag.
"Okay," she said, "Who's ready to go home?"
Josh and David followed her out to the car. On the
drive home David just looked out the window. Josh tried
to talk to David about all his gifts and the party, but David
just nodded. Josh gave up and watched the cars outside
his window for the rest of the ride.
When they got to David's house, David's dad wasn't
home. As they pulled into the drive way they saw Josh's
dad walking up the street. They climbed out of the car
and waited for him.
"Did you have fun?" Josh's dad asked.
"Yeah, it was lots of fun," Josh said.
"Good. Thank you, Mrs. Shutak, for inviting Josh."
"No problem. They both had so much fun," she
said.
"Bye David," Josh said. "Happy birthday."
"Thanks, Josh."
Josh took his Dad's hand and they walked back up
the street. Josh breathed in the familiar smell of gasoline95
